Tim Talks: The Portrayal of Mental Illness on the Silver Screen

A note from Tine: Welcome to another edition of Tim Talks! For those who are new to Beautyholics Anonymous, Tim Talks is a new series on the blog where my husband, Tim, will be sharing his knowledge to help raise mental health awareness. Tim is a psychiatrist who works in metro Melbourne. His area of interest is child, adolescent and youth psychiatry.

I’m really excited for today’s post because when Tim and I were planning his content for Tim Talks, he came up with this topic and I was immediately intrigued. This is the post I’ve been waiting for since we started Tim Talks.

Enjoy!

Tim Talks: The Portrayal of Mental Illness on the Silver Screen

It’s that time of the year when there is a lot of excitement around the movie and TV industry, with such glamorous award events as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. As Tine would know, I am a huge fan of the silver screen; I find that movies and TV shows serve as an outlet to immerse oneself into an alternative reality even though they are but brief moments.

Ever since I entered into the field of psychiatry, one of the fascinations I hold about the movie world is the portrayal of mental illness on the big screen. Like it or not, our views and perceptions are influenced to a degree by what we view in the media. I think we can learn a lot about mental illness from the movies, but one caveat is that, due to the dramatising of films and TV shows, the depiction of mental illness can be somewhat skewed or portrayed quite contrary to reality.

I thought it might be interesting to discuss some contemporary films, characters in TV shows and some classic movies, whilst offering some context to the elements of psychiatry in them. I will not go into detail of the films and TV series as some readers might start hurling abuse for the spoilers if they have not viewed any the movies below yet. 🙂

Hello Airbrushed Skin with Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder

Charlotte Tilbury's Airbrush Flawless Finish Skin Perfecting Micro-Powder in Fair

A few weeks ago, I did a bit of a sneaky purchase on Beautylish. It was late; I was bored, there was nothing good on the telly and I had the iPad with me. Somehow the fingers typed “Beautylish.com” and *ahem*, a couple of Charlotte Tilbury items went into the cart and about a week later, hello beauty haul!

I know. Late night “window” shopping? Very dangerous.

Anyway, it was my first time shopping at Beautylish.com and I must say, I love how they packed my items! Every item was, literally, a brown paper package tied up with string! Suffice to say, Beautylish, I’ll be back!

Bloggie Wednesday: Do Emoticons in Blog Posts Make Them Less “Professional”?

Bloggie Wednesday: Do Emoticons in Blog Posts Make Them Less "Professional"?

© BGR

Readers of Beautyholics Anonymous already know this as it’s very obvious in my blog posts but I use emoticons in my blog posts. In my WordPress settings, I have the option to convert emoticons like =) and =P to graphics on display. I’ve always had emoticons in my blog posts since way back when I started personal blogging so it has never occured to me that most other bloggers don’t do the same.

A few weeks ago, I was reading some of the blogs I follow on Feedly and it finally hit me; about 99% of them don’t use emoticons in their blog posts. I’m not just talking about the emoticon graphics that WordPress automatically converts; heck I don’t even see the good ol’ typed out smiley face. It got me thinking: do emoticons in blog posts make them less professional-looking?

The Lipstick Graveyard

The Lipstick Graveyard

A few friends and I caught up over the weekend and being the beauty gals that we were, one of our topics of conversation led to lipsticks. We chatted about the brand of high-end lipsticks we enjoy, how we store them and so on. This made me think of my own lippie collection (lipsticks, lip glosses, lip lacquers and so on). Specifically, what am I going to do with the lipstick graveyard that I have?

If you’re a regular on Pinterest (which I’m now quite an addict of. Who knew?!), you’ll see hundreds of images on how lipstick organisation. You know those pretty clear acrylic drawers and dividers that you can use to hold your lip products? I have those too. And believe it or not, those lippie containers are now my lipstick graveyard. By the way, if you’re wondering what the heck a lipstick/makeup graveyard is, it’s a place where barely used makeup end up in your home. It could be old and manky but for some reason, it’s still not in the bin. It’s where makeup goes to die. A graveyard, so to speak. 😛
