Tim Talks: An Introduction To Mindfulness

A note from Tine: Welcome to another edition of Tim Talks! For those who are new to Beautyholics Anonymous, Tim Talks is a new series on the blog where my husband, Tim, will be sharing his knowledge to help raise mental health awareness. Tim is a psychiatrist who works in metro Melbourne. His area of interest is child, adolescent and youth psychiatry.

To be honest, I’ve never even heard of the term “mindfulness” until about a year ago. I haven’t really heard of people talking about it and then suddenly, every other article in magazines are going on and on about mindfulness. It’s something I’m still learning and if you’re new to it too, I hope that Tim’s explanation on mindfulness will help you understand the concept better. Do approach it with an open mind. I used to think that mindfulness was hokum. It’s not.

In the previous Tim Talks post, I briefly raised mindfulness as a skill that can be useful as we try to deal with stressors in our lives. Before we start looking at mindfulness, I’d like to challenge you readers to recall what you were doing or experiencing in the first five minutes from when you got out of bed this morning. Chances are that most of us would have gone through the motions and would have very limited awareness of what we did in that period of time. Most people refer to this as the ‘auto-pilot’ mode, which I feel can similarly be reflected as a lack of mindfulness.

I hope that this blog post will help give a clearer perspective of mindfulness, its usefulness and applicability.

Win The Foundation Race with Covergirl’s Ready Set Gorgeous

Covergirl Ready Set Gorgeous Foundation

I’ve been reading and watching a lot of reviews on this foundation by Covergirl on numerous beauty blogs and YouTube. There were a lot of mixed reviews on this but the majority of them leaned towards the positive side. When Coles had a 50% off all Covergirl products, I quickly snapped it up so that I too could give it a go.

I must say; this foundation has topped a lot of foundations I’ve tried lately. And that’s saying a lot. 🙂

Bloggie Wednesday: What The Heck Do I Do With All Of The Beauty Products I Receive And Review?

Press Samples

It’s no secret that as a beauty blogger, I’m fortunate to receive a good amount of beauty products from brands and PRs to review on a regular basis. Nothing crazy, of course, but the items do add up. A lot of the products were unsolicited (this means that I didn’t personally request for them) and some were items that I requested to try out and review. As I said, the items do add up as time goes by.

A question I’m often asked is “what do you do with all of the beauty products that you receive and review? What do you do with the ones that you’ve tried out but don’t like?“. I thought I’d share my answer with you today. I’m not telling you this to brag that I get a lot of free stuff (really if you think about it, nothing comes for free); it’s just to satisfy a curiosity that some of you may have. For the purpose of this blog post, the beauty products I mentioned are the ones that are sent to me for editorial consideration.

Glycolic Acid Vs Lactic Acid: What’s The Difference And Which One’s Better?

Glycolic Acid vs Lactic Acid

© hammett79

Last week, I did a review on Sunday Riley’s Good Genes Treatment serum and a question I received from reader Norlin was this: “what’s the difference between glycolic acid and lactic acid?”. Sunday Riley’s Good Genes is a lactic acid serum, and rather than replying an essay of a comment, I thought I’d share my answer with all of you instead.

I’m not a cosmetic chemist so I cannot delve into the science of the acids much but here’s what I can tell you about glycolic and lactic acids. This is not to be considered as medical advice.

Glycolic acid and lactic acid are alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and while there are also acids like malic, citric and tartaric, the most effective and well-researched ones are glycolic and lactic acids. Essentially, what they do is exfoliate skin cells by breaking down the substance in skin that holds skin cells together. These acid-based exfoliating treatments chemically exfoliates the skin without the scrubby bits and leave the skin glowing.
