Please Help Sponsor My City2Sea Run For Beyond Blue!

City2Sea 2015 Run

First of all, thank you so much for the positive responses I received on the blog post on my journey to better health and fitness. To be honest, I was pretty nervous publishing it because it has only been close to 2 months and I wasn’t sure if I should have written it 6 months down the road. But I figured there’s no shame in what I’m doing at all and if I can help motivate someone to pursue better health and fitness, then I’d have done my part.

A reason why I decided to write about it now and not 6 months down the road is that I’d love your help on something close to my heart. As you know, I’ll be running the City 2 Sea 5km run in November and I’ve decided to run for my favourite non-profit organisation, Beyond Blue.

A Surprisingly Good Blush Find from Luma Cosmetics (Dusty Rose)

Luma Cosmetics Powder Blush in Dusty Rose

I’ve seen Luma Cosmetics makeup around at Priceline pharmacies but to tell you the truth, I was never inclined to check the products out. The makeup range is typically placed on a standalone shelf near big drugstore brands like Covergirl, Maybelline, etc and the pink plastic packaging on the whole doesn’t look very appealing.

One day as I was perusing makeup on the Covergirl shelves, the Luma Cosmetics shelf stood right in front of the Covergirl ones and I thought, oh why not see what they have? I wasn’t particularly drawn to the eyeshadows or lippies, but there was something about the two blushes they have that drew me closer to check them out. After swatching the two shades, I knew I had to snap one up right away.

Oh what a gorgeous colour the Dusty Rose was!

Tim Talks: Getting Stuck In Our Ways (A Brief Look At The Concept Of Defences)

A note from Tine: Welcome to another edition of Tim Talks! For those who are new to Beautyholics Anonymous, Tim Talks is a new series on the blog where my husband, Tim, will be sharing his knowledge to help raise mental health awareness. Tim is a psychiatrist who works in metro Melbourne. His area of interest is child, adolescent and youth psychiatry.

Today, he talks about something I find highly fascinating because it never occurred to me that there are things that I do that are considered my defence mechanism to deal with little things that stress me out in any way. The title of the post “Stuck In Our Ways” is really apt because I am stuck in my own way to protect myself against the slightest sort of stress and/or negativity. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Read on to find out.

Tim Talks: Getting Stuck In Our Ways (A Brief Look At The Concept Of Defences)

© Joshua Earle

Before entering into the field of psychiatry, I have always been curious to find out what underlies certain behaviour that we observe in people we come into contact with. For instance, why do some sensible people get entangled in self-destructive patterns such as substance misuse, restricted eating or gambling?

Sigmund Freud was one of the earlier proponents of this term ego defences, which is our mind’s unconscious efforts to protect against unwanted anxieties, feelings or impulses when we are encountering stressful situations. The thing to emphasise here is that this is an unconscious mechanism, and it is not confined to each of us using one defence in all situations. As such, we do have a limited degree of control over the function of these defences.

Various forms of psychotherapy try to unpack and increase our awareness of our defences, so that we can make conscious attempts to modify our responses to these defences.

Make Up For Ever Palette 9 Artist Shadow #1: Not Just Another Nude Eyeshadow Palette

Make Up For Ever Palette 9 Artist Shadow #1

This beautiful palette was given to me as a gift by a very dear friend who recently moved to Australia. Okay don’t judge me, y’know, me being a beauty blogger and all, but I, erm, have never used nor owned any eye makeup from Make Up For Ever. Why? I have no idea, to be honest. I guess for one, the brand is not readily available here in Melbourne unless I buy it online, at a beauty expo like IMATS or in Sephora or PM Studio in Sydney. When I’m in Malaysia 1-2 times a year, I’m more drawn to Asian cosmetics than I am Make Up For Ever anyway, so that’s a no-go. Anyway, whatever my excuses are, nope, I haven’t tried any Make Up For Ever eyeshadows. Until now.

When I first took this palette out of the box, I gasped at how beautiful it is. My friend knows me well to get me a neutrals palette because it’s so versatile and it’s just the type of colours I love to wear. Even though it comes in magnetic cardboard packaging, it’s surprisingly heavy and sturdy. It also comes with a big mirror, which is a plus in my books.
