I’m not a huge movie buff but I do enjoy a movie or two every now and then. There are some movies that I’d watch for the action scenes only, for the main actors only (Hugh Jackman. Benedict Cumberbatch. Yummm!) and for the laughter (not so much tears; I don’t do tearjerkers). But there are some shows that I would watch repeatedly for the fashion and makeup.
Sometimes the fashion and makeup are so good that if I had the DVD or the downloaded movie/TV show, I’d rewind and pause just to take it all in. I know I know, better things to do with my time and all that, but sometimes, you just gotta appreciate the pretty things in life, y’know? 😛
I thought I’d share a few of the movies and TV shows in which I’ve really enjoyed the fashion and makeup. You’d have heard of most of them as they’re famous for the outfits and makeup. On the other hand, you may be surprised to find a gem or two that you haven’t thought of before.
Sex and the City
I’m a huge fan of the Sex and the City series but the movies, to be honest, not so much. The sequel to the movie was really … meh. Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the movie but the fashion. Oh the fashion! You gotta love the fashion that were featured. That white Halston dress that Carrie wore at the opening scene of the first movie was sold out within hours. Patricia Field did a great job styling the characters. The clothes were gorgeous, outrageous, sometimes plain weird but altogether iconic.
The Devil Wears Prada
Personally, I’m not a fan of the movie. To me, the star of the show was Meryl Streep, hands down. Anne Hathaway’s character annoyed me (I even found her annoying in the book). Having said that, I absolutely love the opening scene of the movie where gorgeous, leggy women prepped for their day of work to K.T. Tunstall’s Suddenly I See. For weeks I’d play that on the telly in the mornings as I prepare for work.
Blended
I’m not the biggest fan of Adam Sandler but I do enjoy watching him and Drew Barrymore in romantic comedies because there’s a sort of awkward yet sweet chemistry between the two. The movie was funny ha ha but the best part of it for me was not so much the movie but Drew Barrymore’s makeup and hair. Her makeup in that movie was absolutely on point. The smoky but not overly done eye makeup, the dewy, glowy face and lip colour … gorgeous! Tim was quite annoyed with me throughout the whole movie because I kept going on and on about how beautiful Barrymore’s makeup was.
Gossip Girl
I don’t think I even need to say much about this one because almost everyone I know watches Gossip Girl not just for the story but the fashion as well. Trends were set based on the show alone. Heck, I even started wearing headbands because of Blair Waldorf (something I haven’t worn since I was 12!). The entire series was good but the fashion was great. Time to revisit the show all the way from Season 1!
Rizzoli and Isles
This is one of my favourite TV shows (love the books by Tess Gerritsen) and just like Gossip Girl, I have to say that I enjoy the fashion just as much as the show. Rizzoli’s fashion, not so much; her outfits were quite standard and plain for playing a police detective. But Isles; now her outfits are much, much better. She’s seldom seen without her Hermes Birkin (how morbidly stylish to be walking into a crime scene with dead bodies in her super high stilettos and Birkin). Her dresses, her pencil skirts … gorgeous!
The Great Gatsby
Okay to be fair, I’ve not watched the full movie, only snippets when Tim was watching it. But I have to say, I was a lot more interested in the makeup and clothes far more than I am about the movie. If you haven’t watched the movie, the trailer and snippets alone will have you gasping at the stunning costumes. I love the red lips on Isla Fisher in the movie and Carey Mulligan’s hairstyle was so pretty.
My Love From the Star
This is the first Korean drama I’ve watched and oh my goodness, how I’ve enjoyed it! Storyline aside (cheesy at times but pretty bloody romantic if you ask me), the fashion and makeup were spot on. Think plenty of designer-wear (all the way down to the pyjamas!) and pretty Korean-style makeup. This show set so many trends; many items of clothing, accessories and even makeup were sold out worldwide because of the influence of this K-drama.
These are just a few but there are lots more that I enjoy but I’ll leave them for another day. These are the times when I’d forget the man eye candy and stick to the fashion and makeup instead. That’s when my wallet would squeal in alarm because you can bet I’ll be trying to get my hands on some of those pieces if I can!
Definitely Sex in the City TV show .. I always loved Charlotte’s fashion sense. The first move was good, second .. not so much.
I’m very much into Grimm right now, but not for the makeup or fashion ~ love the story line.

Right? I thought the second movie was really disappointing. I love SATC and thought the 2nd one was a let down.
Oooh Tim and I love Grimm! What season and episode are you watching now? We’re almost caught up to the very latest and I’m absolutely LOVING how the story is going now!
Just finishing up season 4 .. love how Wu knows all!!
I laughed out loud at this conversation when Juliette was looking up Hexenbiest info in the trailer:
Nick: Hexenbiest?
Hank: Makes sense after everything Adalind’s done to the both of you.
Nick: Yeah, to all of us.
Wu: Not to me.
Hank: Hmm, you ate her cookie.
Wu: I did?
Nick: Ya. That’s why you ate your carpet.
Wu: Ohhh.
Can’t wait to start season 5 !!
Monica
HAHAHAHA I remember that scene! I’m so glad they wrote Wu into knowing about what’s going on now. So funny!
….ahem….I also watched Gossip Girl for the fashion, it had nothing to do with Chace Crawford
Of course not 😉
The ladies of ‘Suits’! Of lawsie may, I LOVE what they wear!

Okay I gotta start watching Suits now. And not because of the hunky men. 😛
SATC and The Devil Wears Prada are absolutely amazing for fashion and makeup! Love love love!!!! 😀

That white coat that Anne Hathaway wore in The Devil Wears Prada. Oh and that green coat too. LOVE!!
Funny how I made the same comments about Drew Barrymore on Blended! She looked so effortlessly pretty. Have you watched 50 First Dates?

I love 50 First Dates! I didn’t pay attention to her makeup then but it was so romantic. I cried when she got rid of the diary and said goodbye to him.
But man, Blended! How good was her makeup??
Uh… no I don’t LOL! I dont’ actually pay attention to the makeup or fashion in a movie/tv show. Most of the time, I’m watching for the plot. Incidentally, I watched the Devil Wears Prada for the first time just 2 months ago, and I quite enjoyed it for the mindless amusement and yes, Meryl Streep carried the whole show. I loved her (and her bags!) Oh if there’s one thing I’d notice in a movie/show it’s the bags. That’s it. Nothing else will make an impression on me and especially not a lipstick or eyeshadow LOL 😀 Just me I guess

Hahahah I did just that for “My Love From The Star”. I fell in love with the Delvaux Tempete when I laid eyes on it in Paris and whaddyaknow, the main character Cheon Song Yi carried the exact bag in the exact colour I love and wanted!
Years ago, I saw ‘The back-up plan’ with Jennifer Lopez and I spent the WHOLE movie saying how gorgeous her make-up and hairstyles were. My friends were annoyed! LOL

Hahaha I don’t think I watched that one but I totally get your excitement! I’d be like “OMG DID YOU SEE HER HAIR???” and “OMG HER LIPSTICK!”. Hee hee!
Definitely love Suits. I personally liked Anne Hathaway in the Devil wears prada and also Emily blunt (Into the woods was quite okay but mid-end was bait..um.. confusing). I personally love some musicals such as Wicked and Le miz (the movie too, oh my..so realistic, which made it even better). Anyways, I remembered when I first watched the devil wears prada that really plunged me into the world of cosmetics, when Emily said something along the lines of “She picked up a Shu uemura mascara and …”. Then, I was wondering what it was and what was a “Shu uemura” so I read about it and really got into cosmetics then. Weird huh? It also plunged me into the world of fashion! The dresses were pweetty 😀
Something borderline irrelevant but I do love the show Once Upon the Time and their costumes and makeup-style always intrigue me. I guess because I like to see how they transform a cartoon character’s appearance onto a real person.

Oh I forgot to add: I forgot from which episode or which movie this scene from Sex and the City is but the scene where Carrie tried all these branded wedding dresses. So breathtaking I have to rematch multiple times. I think the scene is also available on youtube but I’m not sure.

I enjoy Once Upon A Time too. Belle’s makeup to me was always on point. Snow’s hairstyle (well, Ginnifer Goodwin), the modern one, was absolutely gorgeous.
Hahahah oh yeah I remember the Shu Uemura reference in The Devil Wears Prada. That was funny!
Yes! I say yes to KT Tunstalls Suddenly I See on the replay every morning getting ready for work for weeks after I first watched it. I dream of the day I too would run across the street to catch a cab 😛 hahahaha
WOOHOO!!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought that way about that opening scene on The Devil Wears Prada! Now each time I listen to Suddenly I See, I’ll be thinking “ooh makeup for work prep time!”. 😛
I loved Drew’s makeup in “Blended” too! I believe it was all from her own makeup line! “Blended” was a terrible movie so I spent the whole time googling Drew’s makeup!!
Hahaha it wasn’t the best, I have to give you that but I had a good laugh. 😛
