Top 8 Foundation Mistakes Most of Us Make

Even though eye makeup is more complicated to apply than foundation, you'll be surprised at how many mistakes a lot of us make when it comes to the very base of our makeup. Goodness knows I've had my fair share of mistakes when I was learning how to use liquid foundation and even more so when I experimented with mineral foundation.

In fact, even after so many years of using foundation, I still make some of these mistakes every now and then. Heck, I'd look in the mirror and go "ah crap, why didn't I blend the foundation out better? It's all patchy and horrid now!". Sometimes, we don't even know we're doing it wrong.

Today I thought I'd share with you the top 8 foundation mistakes most of us make. And by us, I meant *ahem* me. All of these were mistakes I used to make when it comes to applying foundation and believe it or not, I still fumble on a couple of them from time to time. I'm only human after all and I'm sticking to that excuse! :P

Top 8 Foundation Mistakes Most of Us Make5. Using foundations that are unsuitable to our skin type

As I have combination skin, I’m not a fan of rich foundations because they’re often too thick for my skin. Those with dry skin usually avoid foundations that leave a matte finish on the skin because those sort of foundations can emphasise the fine lines on the skin. For those with oily to combination skin, I recommend using foundations that are light, oil-free and preferably leave a matte finish on the skin (if you like a satin or dewy finish, mix the foundation with a tiny bit of highlighter instead) and for those with dry skin, try hydrating foundations that leave a satin finish on the skin.

Having said that, a number of new foundations these days have cross-over abilities where those with oily skin can use hydrating foundations without looking like a greasy pot and those with dry skin can use light, serum foundations that aren’t only hydrating but still looks matte and doesn’t emphasise fine lines. I recommend experimenting and testing foundations out first prior to purchase.

My pleasure! So glad it helped. 🙂
Lemme know which one you ended up getting!

I usually apply to little and then think “this foundation has no coverage!”. Or I’m so drawn to those “natural” gray/beige shades.. that look awful. I’m one that needs to go have a makeup artist help me select a foundation.

It’s a good idea to get colour matched with various foundations in store. I do that when I want to try out new foundations without purchasing first. Don’t buy yet; give it a day and see how the foundation works for you. Some foundations oxidise after a few hours and you won’t be able to know that happens if you buy the foundation right away. We can’t return opened cosmetics here and I’ve definitely ended up with plenty of duds. 😛

I’ve definitely been guilty of overpowdering. Must use a light hand!

I think that’s why I’ve switched to the Guerlain Meteorites and for travelling, L’Oreal’s Nude Magique BB Powder for my powdering needs because I cannot overpowder with them even if I want to. Once, I tried a new matte pressed powder by Maybelline and I forgot that I don’t need that much powder, swirled my brush and applied it on my face. Yikes too much powder!
