Okay, I know that you know that I have short hair now. Goodness knows I’ve been *ahem* showing it off a lot more than necessary on the blog and Instagram. Still, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what having short hair is like for me now, especially after I’ve had long hair for so many years. It’s also a good form of record for me in case I grow my hair out in future and want to chop it all off again.
It’s been many, many years since I’ve had the desire to have short hair. I’ve had short hair for the first 18 years of my life and once I started to grow my hair out to a length I’ve desired for so long, I had no intentions of ever having short hair again. Let’s just say that pre-hair tools and bad hair wax days, short hair didn’t suit me at all.
Still after having exactly the same length and style for over 10 years, I was bored. The day Norlin had her hair cut to such a short pixie cut, well, that was the day I started lusting after short hair. I wanted “the Norlin”. I had many discussions with my hairstylist Jacky (Oscar Oscar Salon) and while he really liked the idea of chopping my hair off, he didn’t think my hair type would suit the “Norlin”. So we started to do it in baby steps and he cut my hair from boob-length to collar bone-length. It felt really strange yet highly invigorating to have so much hair cut off.
After that, I was hooked. I wanted to go shorter. I still don’t have the kahunas to pull off the “Norlin” but I did let Jacky talk me into cutting my hair to just above my shoulders. I love it!
Still, there are pros and cons to having short hair, at least, in my case.
Pros:
- It’s so easy to wash and even easier to dry. Blowdrying takes less than 5 minutes now.
- I only need so little shampoo and conditioner per wash, saving on product and money.
- I still need to use a flat iron on my hair as it’s much shorter now and with my type of hair, a much shorter length means it’s going to be poofier without the weight of hair pulling all that volume down. On the other hand, hair straightening only takes 5 minutes now compared to at least 15 minutes before.
- I’ve received a lot more compliments about my short hair than when it was long. Then again, this isn’t really counted because no one in Australia has seen me with hair this short, not even my husband. Any sort of change is good, right? Right? 😛
Cons:
- It’s strange but my hair gets oily at the roots very quickly compared to when I had long hair. By the beginning of the second day, my hair is limp at the roots (especially at the crown). I’ve always loved second-day hair when my hair was long but now that it’s short, I’m really not liking second-day hair.
- When bad hair days come, there’s nowhere to hide. When my hair was long, if it was looking mighty shit, I just tied it up in a loose bun or ponytail. No big deal. However, now that my hair’s short, when I’m having bad hair days, I honestly have no idea what to do with it. The most I could do is spray the roots with dry shampoo and pray hard for the best. Most of the time, it ends up looking flat.
I won’t lie when I said I was tempted to have long hair again when I was looking back at old photos of me with long hair. It’s like looking at a different person. It was then that I realised how much hair can change a person. It sounds silly to even think that but I feel that it’s true. For me, it’s like moving on to the next part of my life with a new hair length and style that is completely different from what I had before.
Anyway, what started out as just a blog post on my jotting down the pros and cons of having short hair has somehow turned into a reflective piece of how I’ve changed with different hairstyles. Ah well, that’s hair for you, eh?
Oh, I thought you meant you cut it even shorter since pixies seem to be all the rage. I love your hair the length it is. I think just about shoulder length is so versatile. But seeing your “old” pix, I love your long wavy purple ombre-ish style. But you look more sophisticated in your shorter hair. Just my two cents 😉

Haha I wanted to go down the pixie route but 1) my hairstylist said it wouldn’t suit my hair and 2) I’m too chicken to do it! 😛
Whenever I see pics of my old long hair, I desperately want it back. At the time I thought it was almost like a bit of a trademark having hair so long, something that set me apart. But then I remind myself of the hours I spent trying to detangle and brush it after I washed it, and how looooong it took to straighten or curl (only for the curls to drop out immediately), and compare it to the ease of dealing with it now, I become very glad again that I did go for the chop. I did it gradually as well, I graduated from below waist length to mid upper arm length to shoulder length to proper bob length… I think the last one was a step too far for me so I’ve grown it back down to my shoulders and I’m happy with that. But it’s like I told my hairdresser, once you chop you can’t stop! Hehe.

Hahaha I know right? It’s like you wanna go some more. And more. And more. I’m still thinking I may want to grow it out a little longer though. Short is nice but it’s getting really poofy now.
“Next part of my life”
Is it finally happening?!
Love you in your short hair btw. 🙂
I wish. Not yet. 😛
Your short hair looks good! I’m not sure about the oiliness bit but it could be when you had long hair, the oils could um… “spread” more? I don’t have that issue though. I hacked mine off earlier this year and have not looked back since. My scalp is in much better condition now and drying takes less than half the time than when it was long.

Thanks Lyn! I have to say, drying time is such a hoot. SO FAST!
While I do really miss my longer hair where I can easily style in more ways than I can now – well I can do it now too but just too lazy :p. – I do love how quickly I can style it. Honestly, I love your shorter hair – cannot even remember what you looked like with a longer style until you put this post up! Anyway, besides dry shampoo, I use a volumising powder to “kill” the flatness sometimes.

Aww thanks! Can’t get the “Norlin”, so sticking with this one instead. 😉
