I haven’t mentioned Covergirl on the blog in a while now so today, I thought I’d share with you some of their TruBlend makeup. Just a side note: did you know that Covergirl was the very first makeup brand I really wanted to try out when I first laid eyes on the Covergirl ads with Niki Taylor in a teen fashion magazine? Covergirl wasn’t (and still isn’t) available in Malaysia and after reading so much about it for so many years, the first beauty product I bought when I visited Australia was a Covergirl lip gloss. Okay back to the TruBlend makeup. Covergirl calls it the TruBlend 3 step system where they have
Step 1: Cover with the TruBlend Liquid Makeup foundation
Step 2: Conceal with the TruBlend Fixstick Concealer, and lastly
Step 3: Set with the TruBlend Pressed Powder

On another side note, when I wrote “step 1”, I almost also continued with “we can have lots of fun*”. 😛

Covergirl Tru Blend Liquid Makeup (RRP AU$19.95)

This foundation is a lightweight yet creamy one that is very easy to blend on the skin. The coverage isn’t high though; we’re talking about the very maximum, buildable to a medium coverage. The shade I’m currently using is the L7, which is a warm-toned beige. It’s a decent foundation but to be honest, there isn’t much of a wow factor to it. It doesn’t make my skin look glowy and radiant. Then again, this isn’t what the TruBlend foundation is about. It’s to give you a nude look that appears natural and seamless, and that’s what this foundation does. I wouldn’t say it’s an amazing foundation but it’s not bad either. Thankfully, it looks better on the skin as the hours go by.

Covergirl Tru Blend Fixstick Concealer (RRP AU$14.95)

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this concealer. I didn’t think I’d like concealers that come in a crayon-like stick and expected this one to be dry and hard to blend. I’m pleasantly surprised to find that it’s quite the contrary. As it’s a crayon, it’s very easy to “draw” on the skin, goes on creamy and definitely very easy to blend without looking as though I have two odd textures on my skin from the concealer and the foundation.

The ‘hate’ part comes in after a long day with the concealer on. The concealer looks great on the skin during the first few hours. However, after a long day of having makeup on, the concealer looks very patchy, especially at the undereye area. It also gets a tad crusty when it has sunk into fine lines after a good number of hours. If I only need to have makeup on for a few hours, this concealer works well for me. Any longer than, say, 4 hours, and it will start to look dry and patchy on my skin.

Covergirl Tru Blend Pressed Powder (RRP AU$18.95)

I’ve used a number of Covergirl powders before and to be honest, I expected this to be rubbish. The ones I’ve tried prior to the TruBlend pressed powder were slightly gritty and definitely chalky on the skin. This one’s a refreshing change. It’s quite finely-milled and while it does look a tad chalky when swatched, it doesn’t look nor feel that way when it’s applied on the skin. I didn’t use the enclosed sponge though as I almost always use face brushes with powders, especially pressed ones to make sure I don’t accidentally apply too much powder on my skin. It leaves the skin matte without looking cakey.

All in all, the TruBlend is a pretty decent range from Covergirl. If I had to recommend just ONE product from the range, funny enough, I’d actually recommend the concealer even though we do have a bit of a love-hate relationship. It’s what I’d call a good on-the-go concealer, which you can pop into your makeup bag for quick touch-ups. I wouldn’t use it if I need to have my makeup last all day on me but if I don’t need it on for that long, then it’s a concealer I’d go for.

What I like about the range: Decent your-skin-but-better foundation and good concealer (with a caveat!). The powder is surprisingly good too and isn’t chalky nor gritty.

What I do not like about the range: The concealer doesn’t last long and looks dry and patchy on the skin when I’ve had it for too long. Foundation doesn’t give added ommph to the skin, but this is to be expected as it’s supposed to appear nude.
