Note from Tine: We’ve been working on this for a while now and I’m very excited to announce that there’ll be a new contributor to Beautyholics Anonymous. Introducing … *drumroll please* … Tim! No, he’s not going to be talking about beauty (the fella does my head in when it comes to product reviews. “I like it. Full stop”.) Anyway, for new readers to BA, Tim’s my husband and for the first time ever, he’ll be doing a monthly series on BA on mental health awareness. As a medical professional in mental health, he’s a better candidate to share his knowledge with you about it than I am. Mental health awareness is very important to me and it isn’t just because I married the fella but also something I went through years ago. And before you think he “cured” me, no he didn’t. Thankfully, I’m much, much better place now but I really do wish there was better mental health awareness back then.
As mental health can be a very sensitive subject, I ask that you approach the topic and comments with an open mind and kindness to those who are affected.
Tine has always been an advocate for increasing public awareness of mental health, and with her recent donation and write-up about Beyond Blue, we had a casual conversation about what it might look like if I could provide my perspective on mental illness. For those of you who do not know Mr Beautyholics (if I can use that term), I have been working in public mental health for most of my postgraduate medical training. I do occasionally get referred to as a ‘shrink’ but thankfully that is rare. I entered this field because there is so much that we still have yet to comprehend and conceptualise in the mind and its disorders, and I also like the challenge given it is still a field of medicine that people struggle to have a unifying view of.
Tine and I were brainstorming on what would be a good point of discussion to involve readers of her blog, and this idea kept recurring of doing a myth-busting series on mental illness and health. I think contemporary views of mental health especially in media has been slowly shifting, with more acceptance of peoples’ life struggles with disorders such as depression and anxiety.
However, I also think that there are still many in the public who will conjure images of psychopaths or violent individuals when the topic is broached. I suppose that is not surprising as we are constantly bombarded with breaking news events of mass shootings and catastrophic events where it might be more bearable to think that these perpetrators were ‘out of their minds’ to commit such horrific acts. Usually the truth is much more baffling and controversial, but my hope is to generate discussions and to help you readers gain more perspective in these areas.
One of the other main reasons of doing this write-up was to also discuss matters relating to mental health, and some of the general principles of improving your mental health. I will cover topics such as sleep hygiene (it’s not about how clean you are in bed), mindfulness and some principles of sensory modulation. As Tine brings you sound beauty advice, I hope to bring you sound mental health advice.
I am hoping to contribute to this segment once a month, and my hope is that all of you lovely readers of Tine’s can participate as much as they would like in the articles in the comments section. I will try to work through the more prevalent conditions such as depression, OCD, anxiety disorders before we delve into some interesting fields such as personality disorders, psychopathy, and psychosis.
Please note that these articles are by no means a ‘consult’ or prescriptive in nature, and if you feel that you may require some specialist help and support, your local GP will be the first port of call to help you access schemes such as shared mental health plan for linkages with a psychologist or to refer you onto the local public mental health service.
Till next month, wishing all you readers good mental health (shoot, is that already trademarked by Frasier? Oh well. 😛 )
Great add on to your blog Tine! And welcome Tim! Mental health is one of the issues that is close to my heart, so I’m looking forward to your posts!

Tim: Thanks Norlin 🙂 I really welcome all questions or queries that you feel will be useful to cover in the subsequent write-ups.
Looking forward to your new feature on mental health. Thanks.
Tim’s really looking forward to it as am I! 🙂
That’s an interesting topic to bridge out from a beauty blog! I like your blog because you cover a variety of topics and keeps me coming back for more! Will look forward to your posts regarding mental health in future and congratulations on the debut of Mr Beautyholics!
Aww thanks for the words of encouragement, Kay. You have no idea how much that means to me (have been going through some issues of my own here which I’ll talk more about later). Mr Beautyholic says hi. 😀
Nice choice of topic – I’m sure it will help a lot of people (me included)

Thanks Wendy. I’m so glad it’s well-received so far. I have no idea what he has in store for December yet so I’m waiting as much as you guys! 🙂
looking forward to these segments. I’ve been doing really well lately but had a small relapse this week due to over stress from work. I think it’s really important for everyone to be aware of mental health illness, that it’s ok to get help and that we’re not ‘insane’.

Tim: Shamim, I agree with you on the importance of maintaining good mental health, which we must not neglect. The mind has its ways of dealing with emotionally stressful experiences, one of the usefulness of health professionals can be in understanding how we usually process these experiences (or avoid it) and to gradually be able to learn how to manage our responses in a more healthy manner.
Welcome Tim! And what a wonderful series. This is a topic very close to my heart too and it’s great that you’re helping to raise awareness about it. I’m sure it will help a lot of people.

Tim: Thanks Gio for the welcome 🙂 I know that many people suffer in silence from mental illness, and it does not have to be that way. Hopefully these posts can help readers in identifying features of mental illness and what resources are available to support them or loved ones who are struggling in this area.
Welcome aboard Mr Beautyholics! I look forward to your monthly contributions with great interest,
Tim: Thanks Jane for your warm welcome 🙂 Stay tuned for the next write-up…

Hiya Tim take 3!!! can’t remember my original comment now…
Anyway, cannot wait to read these insightful posts as I work with a lot of mental health clients and I don’t always understand what they are going through.
Tine & Tim (= Time!)
Have a great weekend! x

Sometimes it can be hard to gauge from someone’s behaviour what they might be feeling or experiencing, I try to adopt an inquisitive and non-judgmental approach to try and better understand them especially within their current social context (stressors, losses, family, social connections)
TNT – explosive combination 😛
This adds such a great dimension to your already wonderful and informative blog. It’s a topic which is especially resounding to me because I’ve gone through a period of depression in the past and know just how much of a struggle it is just to be heard or understood. Since then, I’ve always been keen on matters regarding awareness of mental health and I’m so happy to read of this new angle in your blog. All the best!
Thanks heaps Isabel. To be honest, I was worried about how readers would react to this new segment by Tim. Sadly it’s still something that people are quite hush hush about, which shouldn’t be because that’s what makes it worse. Like you, because of what I experienced, I’m also now very keen on mental health awareness. I don’t know what Tim has in store for us in December so I too have to wait with y’all to see what he’s going to talk about next. That man’s keeping mum about it even from his wife. Tsk tsk. 😛
A really really worthy edition to an already awesome corner of the Internet – good on you both! Can’t wait to hear what you’ve got to share Tim.

Tim:Hi Andrea, thanks for your comments. Tine and I both try to spur each other on in what we do, and I hope that by raising readers awareness to developing a more balanced mental health this will also bring about better outcomes in one’s inner and physical beauty.
ooo… I’m really looking forward to this. Some of my doctor friends are also pretty much advocating on creating more awareness on the mental health and to remind us not to take it too lightly when someone does share that they might be having depression because it is real and it does affect the person’s life in many ways, especially during these times where life is becoming more hectic in general.
My sentiments exactly, Sue. I’m so glad you’re on board as well as a lot of readers. Makes Tim and I even more excited for this series! 🙂
It’s exciting to hear about the launch of Tim Talks! So great to see that both of you have jumped on board to help raise and spread greater awareness in this very sensitive area. Looking forward to reading each monthly feature with keen interest! 🙂
Tim: Thanks for your keen interest Dolly, and hope you enjoy the upcoming Tim Talks 🙂
