TGIF folks! Hope you’ve had a good week thus far. Me, I’m just looking forward to the weekend as always!
As it’s Friday, we’re on to day 5 of Makeup Favourites Week and today, it’s all about eyeliners.
I remember a few years ago, in one of my new year’s resolutions, I mentioned that that was the year I was going to master the liquid eyeliner once and for all. I was really envious of those who could draw on liquid eyeliners so effortlessly and with heaps of practice, I finally did it! It’s not perfect or anything but at least, I can say yes, I know how to use it now. 😛
For me, it’s imperative that the eyeliners do not smudge. I can’t stand eyeliners that smudge to my lower lids. As I wear glasses most of the time, the shadow from the glasses and smudged eyeliner onto the lower lids at the end of the day gives me a very tired look. The eyeliners mentioned here do not smudge nor fade after many hours. This is with eyeshadow primer on because I never wear eye makeup without primer (my oily eyelids wouldn’t cooperate with eye makeup if I don’t apply primer first. Sigh.).
Here they are in no particular order.
Maybelline Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner
This liquid eyeliner has a very fine nib. You may have seen advertisements of this liquid eyeliner used to draw floral patterns next to the model’s eyes. This eyeliner’s fine nib allows you to do just that without any issues. Of course, how many of us would actually need to use eyeliner for that, eh? My point is, the fine nib makes it very easy for those with small and/or hooded eyes to use as it minimises the issue of accidentally smudging the lids. I like using this to line the eyes without needing to do the winged flick.
Rimmel Scandaleyes Thick and Thin Eyeliner
Some people find the slanted felt-tip nib hard to use but personally, I prefer it as it makes it so easy to use! It’s like a calligraphy pen for the eyelids. I find doing the winged look easier with the slanted nib especially when I need to follow the curve of my eyeballs seamlessly without dragging. Hmm this reminds me, it’s time to chuck my old Scandaleyes and get a new one.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner
This was a recent discovery for me and I finally understand why it’s such a hit. This is such a fab liquid eyeliner! Like Maybelline’s Master Precise, the brush tip is very fine and it’s so easy to use. I had this on for so many hours and there wasn’t any smudging or fading.
Napoleon Perdis Matte Eye Ink
This liquid eyeliner looks and feels very wet when applied but when it’s dried, it leaves a matte finish. It has quite a thick brush in comparison to the liquid eyeliners mentioned in this list. I wouldn’t recommend this to beginners because the tendency to make mistakes is quite high. Nevertheless, it looks great especially when creating a thick winged liner look.
Estee Lauder liquid eyeliner
Okay, to be fair, I’ve not tried Estee Lauder’s Double Wear liquid eyeliner but I have tried their limited edition holiday/seasonal liquid eyeliners and all of them are fantastic. Estee Lauder’s liquid eyeliners are similar to tubed mascaras; when you remove them with eye makeup remover, they flake off instead of smear off your cotton pads. The intensity of their liquid eyeliners are amazing and they stay on for hours without any smudging or fading. Very impressive!
Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner
Dolly Wink’s liquid eyeliner reminds me of Maybelline’s Master Precise. The brush is very small and fine. The intensity of the liquid eyeliner is not that strong as the rest of the eyeliners here but it’s still easy to use nevertheless. It makes a great beginner’s liquid eyeliner and I wish I started out with it instead of trying on fiddly tube-like inky eyeliners first.
Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense
This is the only pencil eyeliner in the list and that’s because all of the rest of the pencil eyeliners I’ve used just don’t make the mark. I love the Quickliner Intense eyeliners and they’re fantastic for creating very quick smokey eyes without needing heaps of makeup.
Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eyeliner
This was the first liquid eyeliner I splurged on (I usually only stick to the cheapies when I can) and I have no regrets. It has a narrow felt-tip nib that makes it very easy to draw thin and thick lines. Creating the winged liner look is very easy with the Calligraphy eyeliner.
Lord & Berry Liquid Eyeliner Pen
This liquid eyeliner is incredibly similar to the Hourglass Calligraphy. Even the size of the felt-tip nibs are the same. Just like the Calligraphy, this also makes it very easy to draw on the lash line.
L’Oreal SuperLiner Perfect Slim
This is quite an interesting liquid eyeliner. It has the longest felt-tip nib out of all the eyeliners mentioned here and has a very fine tip. This is also another liquid eyeliner that’s easy to create the winged liner especially when, er, winging out at the corners of the eyes.
There you have it, my top 10 eyeliners and why I love them. It took a long time for me to master them properly and really, if Ms Clumsy Hands here can do, you can do it too. 🙂
Stay tuned to tomorrow as I share with you all things lashes and brows!
What about you? What’s your favourite eyeliner? Do you prefer using liquid or pencil eyeliners?
Catch up on Makeup Favourites Week!
I’ve always loved the Maybelline eyeliners and they were my staple but lately all 3 of the ones I bought back to back have all been dry practically right out of the packaging. I’m guessing that’s not a coincidence and they must’ve reformulated or something.
Switched to BYS (you get it from Kmart), surprisingly good, also much blacker than Maybelline plus cheap to boot! What’s not to love? 😀
Oh dear that’s not good. Yeah if all 3 that you’re bought doesn’t work as well as you remembered, then they must have reformulated (what are the chances that ALL 3 are lemons?).
Ooh really? BYS? I must admit, I’ve always overlooked their products (except for the blush trio, now those are good). I’ll check it out. 🙂
Agreed, I really wasn’t expecting much out of the BYS liners but having said that I am a sucker for eyeliners. Eyeliners are my HG product, if I leave the house without it people ask me why I look so tired! (humbug!) So I try every single one I can get my hands on and this one pleasantly surprised me.
But thanks to your makeup series from this last week I went straight out and tried the Benefit Gimme Brow, it is now part of my makeup bag. LOVE! Just wish there was a cheaper alternative cuz gurlfriend…Ka-ching!
Sigh, tell me about it. I lost my first Gimme Brow when I was away at a conference and had to buy a new one ‘cos I can’t do without it. Money flying out of the pocket for something so small. I did pick up a tip from a reader though. Keep the tiny brush after the Gimme Brow’s finished and then use the brush with another tinted brow gel. I plan to do this with the L’Oreal Brow Artist Plumper because while the brush is a tad too big for my liking, the formula’s almost as good as the Gimme Brow. Money saved! 😛
Verily an excellent idea! Thanks for the tip, Tine!
I used to be such a pro at using liquid eyeliners – both the pen and the tube ones…But after doing the “smudgy” look for a while, I cannot seem to get the hang of drawing the perfect flick!! ARGH!!!! I do like L’Oreal’s Perfect Slim Super Liner – BEST ONE EVER! Well, that I’ve ever tried at least.

Haha I know what you mean! Try drawing the end “flick” first and then connect the dots later.
The Loreal Super Liner is pretty impressive, I must say. Their massive Sharpie-like texter isn’t good but this one’s much, much better.
I see your choices are very varied. I am stuck in my eyeliner comfort zone here in Asia. Haha. We have way too many great ones. Basically, all Japanese eyeliners are great. They seem to come from the same factory. KATE, Dollywink, many more with Japanese Cosme Crown.
My all-time favourite is Le Metier de Beaute. There is something about it that is different (other than the price). It is just that bit better than all those Japanese eyeliners. Try it if you have the chance!!
I think Stila Stay-all-day is an amazing alternative to Le Metier de Beaute. That is one worth trying too.

Haha yeah they’re pretty much all over the place! Ooooh LMdB! I’ve been meaning to try out their products (especially the blushes) for ages but the price … ouch the price! Ah yes, the Stila Stay All Day is one liner next to the Kat Von D one that I’ve been meaning to try. I’ve ticked Kat Von D off the list, time to do the same for Stila!
Personally, I find that you can skip their blushes and eyeshadows. Have got a couple of those kaleidoscopes, and while they are buttery soft and incredibly pigmented, the colours are weird. The blush is good too. But really just not worth the money + shipping + hassle.
I do like the LMdB blush brush though!!

Ahh what are you doing to me Jyoan?? First I want the LMdB blush and now you make me want the brush too!
