Now that we’ve entered the second half of the year, I thought it’s a good time to do a bit of a midyear “stocktake” of what’s been going on during the first half of 2014. This post was inspired by Sonia from Sonia Styling who did her version of her midyear edition. Go check hers out! (after you’ve finished reading mine, of course. Tee hee hee!).
It’s been a good year so far. 2014 hasn’t been super fantastic but it hasn’t been bad either. Here’s my version of the midyear edition.
Making: Lots of soy candles for the home. I make candles almost every month of the year except for summer (why add more heat to an already hot kitchen?). The open-plan kitchen and living room smells beautifully of lavender for days!
Cooking: Anything that uses a slow cooker or an oven. Less faffing about the stove, the better! Plus hearty meals from the slow cooker and the oven makes a lot of sense in winter, don’t you think?
Drinking: Organic almond milk. I never thought I’d like it especially since it’s the organic version is a lot more expensive than any sort of milk. I used to tease Tim for getting all “health nut” on me for switching from soy to almond milk but after I’ve tried it with my porridge, I love it! These days, I’m using it for smoothies as well and they’re delicious. The taste is not as strong as soy but it’s still delicious. Oh and lots of genmaicha too.
Reading: A lot more than I did last year. Last year, I read very little books and devoured more magazines. This year, I told myself I need to read less magazines and more books. I kept a list of books that I’ve read in my Google Keep app and while it’s not a lot, I’m onto book #26 now. Currently reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
Wanting: A Roomba or any robotic vacuum cleaners to sweep up Janey’s hair for me. She sheds like crazy! Or anyone who would vacuum my floors for me. Payment in Aldi coffee. 😛
Looking: At the window, watching the rain fall. How relaxing! I may not like the smell of rain (yeah, I’m one of the rare ones who’s not a fan of “rain smell”) but I love watching the rain.
Playing: Fetch with Janey. She’s funny in the sense that she will not play fetch when we’re outside because there’s just far too many distractions around her. Not even a new toy would distract her. My dad suggested I play frisbee with her but there’s no point because I’ll just be throwing AND fetching the thing myself. At home, on the other hand, is a different story. She loves to play fetch then.
Deciding: On what bag to get for myself at the end of the year. In January, I took up the 52 Week Money Challenge to save up for a bag. I’m not to buy any bags until the challenge is up. Every time I see a bag I want, I have to tell myself “eyes on the prize!”. The thing is, I don’t know what the prize is! Any ideas? The problem with me is that I change my mind every 2 seconds. I’m not surprised if by the time the challenge is up, I end up buying a pair of Google Glass instead. 😛
Wishing: My family would visit soon. My parents, brother and his girlfriend will be visiting in September and I can’t wait to see them again. My brother hasn’t visited me since I moved to Australia, that bugger! 😛
Enjoying: My afternoons with Janey. We don’t do much; I’m writing and she’s snoring next to me on the couch. But these are the moments I really enjoy.
Waiting: For the other shoe to drop.
Liking: Couch time with Tim. Even though our living room only has space for one couch, we made sure to get the biggest, most comfortable 3-seater we could find. After dinner, we’ll catch up on our favourite TV shows on the couch.
Wondering: Why the leaves are still on the trees in my yard. During the past few winters, my trees would have been bald by this time but there are still green leaves on the trees. Maybe it’s not cold enough? Damn, it sure feels plenty cold to me.
Loving: My new short hair. I haven’t had hair this short since my uni days. Hair washing and drying times are now much shorter than before. I love it! Although, in hindsight, I reckon I should have cut it in summer because my hair used to keep my neck warm. Now, not so much. 😛
Pondering: How I can create more storage space out of my tiny home. Methinks it’s time for another trip to IKEA.
Considering: Selling a lot of my books, especially the ones I don’t read anymore. I’ll be listing them on Gumtree very soon in case any of your are interested in checking them out.
Watching: Janey sleep. She snores, she kicks, she barks and then she wakes up with the most puzzled look on her face. And then she goes back to sleep. Amuses me to no end.
Hoping: This trying-to-conceive business will yield results soon. How many more procedures do I need to go through? Sigh. Another story, another time, folks.
Marvelling: At a few bloggers whom I admire. They work very hard and reap the benefits. Well-deserved!
Needing: A break. Which sound silly because I just had one last month! A break from a break from another break, maybe? Ahem, first world problems, I know!
Smelling: My current favourite perfume, which is Jo Malone’s Silk Blossom Cologne. Not exactly a winter fragrance but I’m not one to use perfumes seasonally. I didn’t think I’d enjoy such a floral scent so it’s a very pleasant surprise.
Wearing: My grotty Old Navy sweater. My mum left it with me when she visited a few years ago and I’ve adopted it as my own. The sleeves are too short, it’s shapeless, full of old curry stains that I can’t remove but it’s the most comfortable sweater to wear in the cold weather.
Following: My heart. It’s worked so far.
Noticing: How some YouTubers have gained a form of celebrity status where people (usually young girls) would scream and cry when they meet their favourite YouTubers at YouTube conventions. Baffling, very baffling.
Knowing: That every little shitty thing that happens? They too, will pass.
Thinking: That I really should exercise more. I haven’t been walking Janey much no thanks to the constant wet weather. Any ideas for someone who’s too cheap to pay for a gym membership? 😛
Feeling: Blessed with family and friends who love me. They’re not just with me during the good times but helping me through the bad as well. I really couldn’t ask for more.
Admiring: People who actually enjoy ironing their laundry. Really, there are people who love it! I don’t know how they do it because to me, it’s the worst chore. EVER.
Sorting: Out receipts before we meet our tax accountant. There’s got to be a more fun way to do this. Ugh.
Buying: Yet another pair of leopard print shoes. To date, I think I have about 5 pairs. It’s a leopard print addiction!
Getting: To know you readers is a lot of fun! If you’ve been a long-time reader but have never commented, it’s time to de-lurk! Do say hi in the comments or hit the Reply button if you’re subscribed to my blog posts via email. 🙂
Bookmarking: Lots of recipes from food blogs I’ve been following. Problem is, I’m bookmarking more than I’m cooking!
Disliking: The passive-aggressiveness I see on social media. Irks me greatly as it’s so unnecessary.
Opening: Parcels on Fridays. I usually pick up my mail from the PO box every Friday and it’s something I highly look forward to every Friday. They’re usually my shopping haul or products sent to me for editorial consideration. I won’t deny it; it almost feels like Christmas every Friday.
Giggling: At the way Tim plays with Janey. She enjoys her “bum play” time with Tim. It sounds a lot dirtier than it actually is. She lies on her back, Tim pats her rump and she’ll wriggle from side to side. It’s very cute to watch!
Snacking: On slices of light cheese and bits of dark chocolate. To be honest, I’m not a big snacker but when I do eat snacks mid-afternoon, it will usually be a slice of light cheese and/or a piece of dark chocolate. Oh, and coffee. Have to have my coffee with my snacks.
Coveting: A Thermomix. Oh yeah, it’s not beauty products or shoes or even bags. Instead, I’m highly coveting a Thermomix. Is my “auntie-ness” showing? 😛
Helping: To answer any questions you, my dear readers, have (shoot ’em over any time!). Also helping bloggers to troubleshoot their technical blog problems.
Hearing: Lots of smooth jazz and bossa nova music on Pandora. Okay, technically, it should be “listening” but I’m sure you know what I mean.

Over to you!
Isn’t short hair just the best when it comes to getting ready? I’ll be doing this on Monday too, reflecting on my last 38 years. Boy time sure flies! I’m not coveting the Thermomix but I am curious as to how it all works though. And umm…I’ve always been one to be into kitchen gadgetry…not Aunty at all 😉

Oh yeah! Blow-drying short hair is so quick! Geek hosted a Thermomix demo (had a rep over at her place) a few weeks ago and OMG it’s bloody fantastic after you see what it can do.
Wow! That’s a lot of info! 😀
A couple of comments:
1) I know *exactly* what you mean about this blooming ‘trying to conceive’ stuff – how we were lied to about ‘if you even *look* at a guy, you will get pregnant, and it will ruin your whole life’. Its just completely and utterly pants from start to finish really. I stay sane more or less via using the forums on Fertility Friend (there is a lovely Aussie TTC thread that we regularly chat on), and charting like a mad thing (there is comfort for me in at least knowing my BBT, even if it means diddly squat in the grand scheme of things apparently for my body 😛 )
2) Exercise – I can MASSIVELY recommend getting into a dance style – I’ve danced on and off all my life, but have recently taken up West Coast Swing (WCS) and its EPIC. I’ve lost 13 kg, have toned up loads and am laughing SO MUCH, plus have made some friends (which was a struggle what with my weird work and being new here yada yada yada). Melbourne has an EPIC West Coast Swing scene, I can let you know where to go and who to see, whilst its a partner dance, you so don’t need to take a partner along with you, as its a social dance (you swap partners constantly, after every song), so its great whether you want to do it alone or with friends/partners/whatever 🙂 AND there is the BIG WCS event of the year happening in Gelong in Oct, the Australian Open, so you should take it up before then and then you can come along to that and have heaps more fun! 🙂
3) Handbags – I lust after lots of Tod’s bags, they are SO beautiful. I used to love living near Bicester Village in the UK where there was an outlet for Tod’s, so I could indulge my habit for their bags, all be it last seasons, but at about 1/3 of the price if not less 🙂 Such beautifully soft leather. Sigh.
4) Robot vacuum – I won a RoboMaid in a competition, and whilst its good, apparently the Roomba is better (the RoboMaid has fits sometimes and strops about certain things, it kept trying to mate with our bar stools and got stuck constantly on our dining tables, not to mention it just sulked when we put it on the rug in our living area (lots of black and white thick wobbly stripes, a bit like a multi-coloured zebra) and refused to leave a white stripe, so we had to cover over its stairs sensors (the thought of stair sensors is odd to me now we live here and stairs are a rarity in homes – oh how thoughts change quickly lol). Having said that I LOVE it, all I need is a kitten to put on top of it as it goes around, because that would be too cute 😛
5) Much more fun way of tax = do your own. You don’t have to pay for it then either 😛 (although I know its tax deductible so that’s something I guess lol). Its SO super easy here in Australia, and the ATO answer any questions you have about anything so are really helpful getting you the max refund I find (I managed to get a small refund even though I only paid the tiniest amount of tax this year, as I work for multiple people each week so never earn enough from any of them to get a chunk of tax taken off it seems). Tax here is SO amazing. Like a happy party every year where the Government give you free money 🙂 Although logging on to their portals is a bit of a nightmare, given. Super annoying to be screaming at a laptop ‘THAT *IS* MY BLOODY BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER YOU IDIOT – JUST BECAUSE ITS NOT THE BANK ACCOUNT YOU THINK I HAVE DOESN”T MAKE THAT A FACT!!’ (grrr)
6) Brothers, eh?! Same here – but I’m not sure mine will ever come to Australia to visit unfortunately 🙁 Although my parents are discussing coming back over in Autumn next year – hurrah! 😀
7) I LOVE ironing so much – its all wrinkly, you iron it, and its all smooth! Magic! Such a simply satisfying task, why can’t all of life be that easy, straightforward and logic driven? :/ (Disclaimer: This doesn’t actually mean I iron all that much. High days, holidays and work shirts are about it unfortunately. I’m a sloven, what can I say? :P)
8) I’m not sure it has been as cold this year – last year I had frost on my car a few mornings when I went to work, but nothing this year. It sure has been blooming wet though! Grrrr
9) Slow cooker for the win! I LOVE a good slow cooked meal – beef short ribs are my favorite but they are a bugger to get round here, so anything really, it just means I make enough for about 15 people and have to freeze loads (hence there is no room in my freezer currently lol).
Fab post 🙂

Hahaha that’s a LONG comment and I love it!
1. I’ve been wondering if I should join forums like that. Maybe I should because it truly is bloody frustrating. The problem unfortunately lies with me (even though they say it takes two to tango, etc but studies showed problems with me so … sigh.) and many a time I feel like saying “I give up! Who needs kids? Etc etc”.
2. West Coast Swing, eh? Right, I’m Googling that! I tried Zumba at home and while it’s interesting, it’s not as fun as doing it in a class. I’m going to sign up for one just to try out and see if I like it. I used to do a lot of yoga and aerobics before I moved to Australia 6 years ago. Now, I feel like a sloth.
3. 1/3 PRICE OF TODS? I DIE.
4. OMG I’ve seen YouTube videos where cats sit on top of Roombas (or equivalent robotic vacuum cleaners) and they’re hilarious! So funny to watch especially when they’re like “wtf is going on??” Kakakakaka!!
5. I haven’t done the e-tax before because Tim just has his done with his tax accountant. To be honest, after seeing how much I too have to pay for my measly tax, I might as well just DIY and not pay the hefty fee that accountant charges. He does a great deal for Tim, which I understand but for me, it’s just the basic stuff. I can do the basic stuff myself. Right, this year, I’m doing it myself!
No way, you really love ironing?? Hats off to you! 😛
1)Feel free to come on over at any point – http://www.fertilityfriend.com/Circles/viewtopic.php?p=33755906#33755906
(that should be the TTC Down Under thread, if it doesn’t work, hit me up and I’ll see if I can sort it out for you 🙂 )
2) Watch this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkRb5_r6Vk8
OMG I want to BE Torri Smith, she is divine!! (this was a Jack and Jill comp btw, that means they were put together randomly a few minutes before the dancing started and didn’t know what song they would get. That’s how we roll in WCS 😛 )
3) I know, right?
4) Boo to living in Rental and not being allowed pets 🙁
5) It seriously is easy, I promise. The hardest bit is knowing what you’re allowed to deduct for (and for you, that might be heaps as you work from home – not sure of the exact nature of your situation though so do a bit of a read up, although its pretty easy 🙂 (and fun if you’re a geek like me 😛 ).
Thanks for the link lovely. Will check it out 🙂
Saw the video. OMG I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO DO THAT!!!
Your wish is my command:
http://www.barefootswing.com – Scott and Melina rock SO HARD its untrue (I had the pleasure of meeting them and dancing with Scott at the Adelaide weekend we had here – they are AMAZEBALLS!).
And then you can come along with us to the Australian Open in October in Geelong – oh,,, super exciting!!! 😀 lol

Loved reading your list Tine. We wrote ours over on Mr & Mrs – http://mrandmrsromance.com/2014/07/2014-the-halfway-point.html. I’m hoping you get some good news soon too Tine. I’m so with you on the laundry and I consider leopard a neutral so it’s a wardrobe staple.
Christina @ Hair Romance recently posted..Curls Week – Why did my hair change from straight to curly?
Thanks Christina! I really enjoyed reading yours too especially since there were two versions, you and Mr Romance’s. Should have gotten Tim to chip in his thoughts as well although high chances are they’ll be one word answers. “GOOD”. Pfft.
Oh leopard print is such a staple in my wardrobe. As long as I don’t wear all of them at once, all is good!
I actually enjoy ironing (and anything to do with laundry). I love the feeling of perfectly ironed clothes… Weird, no? I usually do it with a movie on. It’s easier and quicker.
Good luck for the trying-to-conceive bit <3
I also wonder how the Thermomix works. Not at all interested in buying one but it's one of life's mysteries as how it all works… If you do a demonstration-type reunion, let me know 😉
Hearing? My husband and 2 kids who have the nack of being able to talk non-stop… All I want is some quiet time!!!

Another one who loves ironing! Where are you guys from? Hahaha seriously though, it’s good that you enjoy it because at least it doesn’t feel like a chore. For me, it’s baaaaaad.
Get a Thermomix to come over to your place to do a demo. There’s absolutely no obligation to buy and so far, I’ve not experienced any product pushing. I went to one and it was bloody amazing. It can do so much that I never thought it could!
Would you teach us how to make home made soy candles pls pls pls pretty pls ? 😉
Hahah stay tuned, I just might! 😉
Aunty to aunty – so strong is my desire for a Thermomix im SERIOUSLY contemplating becoming a sales rep to earn my own!

I went to a demo at a friend’s place a few weeks ago and I was very impressed. Am seriously contemplating getting one at the end of the year. The amount of stuff it can do! We asked the rep how long did it take for her commission to pay off her own Thermomix and she said less than 3 months. Not bad!
I’m reading Gone Girl too!! Intriguing, looking forward to the movie hehe
Also cannot wait to see what bag you decide on at the end of the year. Can I come along when you go shopping, pretty please! x

Hahaha Geek and I will be going shopping at the end of the year for my bag so come along as well! She’s been helping me decide what bag to go for but I change my mind every 2 seconds so I think she’s given up. 😛
Oh, short hair .. I’m almost there! I have been looking at Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory) short hair cut .. and I may do the same .. it seems so .. liberating!
Do you have Amazon Prime? There are some good Jillian Michaels videos for prime members.
Oh, yes .. I want a roomba! But I see the cost and then read the reviews (which aren’t stellar), and I don’t buy one 🙁
Monica.
PS: Janey is sooo cute!

Oh I saw Kaley Cuoco’s short hair cut and it’s gorgeous! I’ve been wanting that short a haircut but my hairstylist said my hair texture may not hold that hairstyle well (well end up looking very poofy). Boo! Ah well, at least it’s now much shorter than before just to start with and I love it! Blow-drying my hair hasn’t been that quick in years!
A friend recommended something called a 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels? I don’t have Amazon Prime but I’ll still check it out nevertheless.
PS: Janey is now snoring next to me dreaming puppy dreams. 😛
I enjoyed reading yours Tine, I did my own too! I’ve been hearing a lot about Thermomix from other ladies and I’ve been thinking about one too. I’m afraid to let you know that it is pure auntie-ness indeed!! Kidding 😉 x

Thanks for doing the tag. I enjoyed reading yours too! As for the Thermomix, once you’ve seen the demo, you’ll be a convert. I got sucked in after seeing a demo a few weeks ago. The rep even made hand cream using the Thermomix! *jaw drops*
Hey Tine, I just wrote mine on my blog! Thanks for the inspiration and it was so fun to write it up. I really enjoyed reading yours and getting to know you better. As someone who has been through fertility issues and played the waiting game as well, just know that you are not alone and even though it seems everyone else has a baby or is pregnant, you will get pregnant!! Just hang in there! There is so much that modern science can help us in that department.

Thanks for doing it Yu Ming; I enjoyed reading yours! Erm let’s just say I’ve muted a LOT of people of Facebook especially the past 6 months because it seemed as though everyone was popping babies at the same time so you can imagine how many baby pictures there were on my timeline. I’m happy for them but on the other hand … I’m sure you know what I mean. I’ve had 2 laporoscopies and a brush with an awful doctor which makes it pretty disheartening. I’ll blog about this soon. Hopefully when I do get a bun in the oven. 😛
