Remember a month ago when I shared with you my thoughts on an instant Holy Grail chemical exfoliating serum from The Skincare Company? Since I absolutely fell in love and adored the serum, I thought I’d also pick the brains of the founder of The Skincare Company, Joanne Auld, to find out more about its philosophy, its products, layering of their serums and that B-word. Botox.
Oh yeah. We’re going there, people. We’re going there.
Joanne Auld is the founder, director and CEO of Pamper Clinic and the driving force behind The Skincare Company. Jo’s passion for skin care is reflected in her day to day running of her own clinic and shares over 20 years experience working in the medical industry. With her advanced certification in medical skin care, dermal fillers and wrinkle reducing treatments, Jo is passionate about the service and products she offers and this is reflected in the day to day running of her own medical skin clinic.
With your long list of qualifications and experience, you run your very own medical skincare clinic, Pamper Clinic. What made you decide to also come up with your own skincare, The Skincare Company?
I have a face-to-face relationship with my clients, so it’s critical the products I prescribe actually work and they continue to trust in my recommendations. Some of my clientele have been with me for over 15 years!
Over the years I have used and recommended many products, with a dream of developing my own range that draws on my personal clinical experience. Six years ago I made this happen. My business partner, Plastic Surgeon Mr. Peter Callan and I started working alongside a bio-physicist to begin work on The Skincare Company in 2008.
What’s the philosophy behind The Skincare Company?
That question is easy to answer, because it’s driven by the needs of our clients. The Skincare Company range is easy to use, affordable and highly effective.
It’s my personal mission to strip out any unnecessary ingredients and ensure our products are as active and effective as possible. Many products on the market have lists on 25 or more ingredients on the labels and I can tell you that most of these are superfluous and artificial. Our active products have only essential ingredients in them.
Do you have any recommendations for women who would love to look younger (*ahem* that would be me *ahem*) who aren’t ready to go down the Botox route just yet? What sort of ingredients in skincare should we look for?
As the saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’ so make sure you wear your sunscreen every day! That said, you should never underestimate the role of skincare in keeping your skin looking light, bright and plump. You can do all the wonderful treatments in the world, but the quality of your skin comes from a good skincare routine which should incorporate some essential skincare ingredients.
I recommend sticking to compounds that are clinically proven to have significant effect on anti-aging, such as: Alpha and Beta Hydroxy acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C (preferably L-ascorbic). We build our range of these key ingredients because they work.
As The Skincare Company has a number of serums like the Niacinamide Serum, Exfoliating Serum, the Vitamin C Antioxidant Serum and so on, what are your thoughts on layering these serums? Can I layer them or should they only be used on their own? Can my skin look smooth and plump and bright at the same time without having to wait for one serum to finish first?
Laying our serums is ideal. For instance our Vitamin C Serum and HB-5 Serum are designed to work synergistically; they actually perform better when used together.
Similarly our Vitamin A Serum and the Exfoliating Serum are designed to compliment each other and we recommend using them on alternate nights.
I’m a real green-thumb so when it comes to explaining skincare to clients I always default to gardening analogies! I believe your skin should be treated like a treasured garden whereby you feed and protect it by day, and restore and repair at night (plus undertake any necessary maintenance).
All of our products are detailed on our website, where you will find detailed information.
Given that you use a lot of active ingredients in your products, are they suitable for all skin types? What about those with sensitive skin? Is there a particular product that sensitive skin should avoid?
All of our products are specially formulated to help boost the skin’s immunity; therefore people with sensitive skin should tolerate the range well.
That said, sensitive skin can be tricky and needs a little more TLC. We recommend those with sensitive skin introduce active products slowly to ensure their skin has time to adjust to their new product.
One of our hero products for sensitive skin is the HB-5 serum. This product is not only great at delivering much-needed hydration, but is fantastic in treating inflammation associated with sensitive skin.
If you can choose only one product in your skincare line as your favourite product, which would it be and why?
This is really difficult to answer because these products are like my children! Each one has been designed with a specific purpose in mind; some are designed to fade pigment, others to treat acne and more generally our products are all designed to rejuvenate the skin.
If I had to choose then I’ll admit the LB Serum has a special place in my heart, as it is packed with antioxidants and incorporates a seaweed extract that has been clinically proven to effectively brighten the skin. I would be lost without my daily dose, to keep my pesky pigmentation at bay.
Everyone on my team has a personal product favourite but the Exfoliant Serum definitely stands out as a hero product, everyone who tries it gets hooked!
Where can I buy products from The Skincare Company? If I’m not able to head to any of the stockists mentioned on the website, are they available for purchase online?
Absolutely! You can shop from our website The Skincare Company and we offer free postage in Australia.
Thank you very much for your time, Joanne!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the interview I had with Joanne. It’s not often that we get to have a chat (albeit an email one) with a founder of a company that creates one of your favourite-st beauty product (the Holy Grail status was awarded so quickly, it’s actually quite shocking in my books) and I’m glad I had the opportunity to do so.
I’m so making another not-so-sneaky skincare purchase very soon. Who’s with me? 🙂
