I Hauled A Bit of Japan Back and It Was Good!

Japan Haul

One of the things I love about travelling to Japan is shopping for beauty products. Actually, make that shopping in general. Asian cosmetics are ridiculously overpriced in Australia and when you finally see your favourite Japanese brands selling fabulous makeup for less than AU$20 (a lot even less than AU$10) each, it’s no wonder why it becomes some sort of supermarket sweep.

I find it incredibly hard to resist shops like Matsumoto Kiyoshi and Segami. These are drugstores that sell the major beauty brands Shiseido, Kanebo, Kose and so on (with plenty of smaller brands under those umbrella ones). I highly prefer them to Sephora (cue gasps!) because the choices are endless. You’d want to put everything you see into your shopping cart, I can guarantee you that.

As usual, my disclaimer is that this haul is not meant to brag, show off … all that jazz. You know what I mean. 🙂

Japan Haul Sunscreens

I resisted from buying too much makeup this time. I bought a lot during my last trip to Japan and I hardly used any of them. This time, I concentrated on sunscreens and boy oh boy, do they have a lot of sunscreens. I like how most if not all of Japanese sunscreens are very lightweight and non-greasy which makes them great bases for makeup. Some even sell refills which are slightly cheaper than the bottled ones. Travel tip: if you have opaque bottles at home, opt for refills instead as they take up less space and weight.

Sunscreens at Matsumoto Kiyoshi

I didn’t go crazy on the BB and CC creams this time and only stuck to one each. I also picked up a couple of refills of cleansing oils (again, great for travellers as they’re much lighter than the actual bottles and can be decanted to clear bottles). As it’s now summer in Japan, they’re not only selling a lot of sunscreens but also facial blotting papers. I love the mino-washi ones as they work better for oily T-zones.

Japan Haul Miscellaneous

A trip to the departmental stores like Takashimaya, Daimaru or Isetan will not be complete without stopping over at the SUQQU counter. This time, I zeroed in on just two items I really wanted to try, which were the Cheek Brush and the eyebrow pen as they came highly recommended by Lisa Eldridge. That brush, to date, is now the most expensive makeup brush I own. I wanted to get it 2 years ago but couldn’t bring myself to spend over $150 on it. This time, I caved. Sigh, the flesh is weak, people. It’s weak.

Makeover at SUQQU

SUQQU’s customer service, as with everywhere else in Japan, was impeccable. The sales assistant offered to give me a makeover and showed me some of their “summer foundations” (e.g. lightweight and/or waterproof foundations). I enjoyed her service so much that I ended up picking up the blush she used on me too. 😛

Japan Haul Helena Rubinstein Suqqu

Other than my beauty haul, I also went a little crazy at Uniqlo. I don’t have any pictures of the clothes I picked up from Uniqlo to show you as they’re all wrinkled from being squashed in the luggage and are also in the laundry basket now. They had great sales going on when we were there so Tim and I just went nuts buying tops, bottoms, undies, socks and so on back. In fact, we bought so much clothes that we needed to buy compression packing bags from Daiso, borrow a vacuum cleaner from the hotel (ah, such an interesting conversation it sparked with the hotel front desk on why we needed to borrow their industrial-strength vacuum cleaner) and compress the clothes just so we could pack them into our luggage!

Japan Haul Frixion Pens and Refills

I thought I’d also show you a few items that are non-beauty related that I just had to get when I was in Japan. In fact, the first things on my shopping list were Pilot Frixion pen refills. I absolutely adore these pens (they’re erasable!) and literally bought out all the stock Takashimaya, Daimaru and Tokyu Hands had. No kidding; I literally cleared all their shelves of the black and blue refills. Oh yeah, I was a girl on a pen mission!

Japan Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

The last item in the haul you’ll see here is the Fujifilm Instax Mini 8. Granted, it’s not the newest model but it was pretty cheap so I decided to get it. The thing about these instant cameras is that while the camera is relatively cheap, the film isn’t. I bought the plain white film in bulk just so each piece is cheaper. Of course, the white ones are quite boring so I also added some from Little Twin Stars, Winnie the Pooh and pink polka-dotted ones. 😛

I hope you’ve enjoyed looking at my Japanese beauty haul. I bought a lot more beauty and non-beauty products than you see here but I’ve decided not to show you what they are as some of them are gifts and some of them will be in a, oh I don’t know, a giveaway perhaps? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out! *hint hint wink wink*

Let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to review and I’ll get on it. If you’ve tried out anything here that I’ve purchased, let me know what you think of them!

Now I think I need to go to Japan only to buy sunscreen enough for a year or two.

Omg their range of sunscreens is absolutely incredible. Best thing about it is that you can get very good sunscreens for less than $10 each. You don’t even need to spend a lot of money on big luxe brands for sunscreens because the drugstore ones are excellent. The photo I posted on the sunscreens were cut off because I had to crop it to a square. The original photo had even more sunscreens!

  2. Emily

Welcome back, Tine! Your trip made me very jealous…

Would love to hear your thoughts on the sunscreens in particular. Maybe a comparison? The BB cream looks interesting too 🙂

Oh! And the Suqqu brush! Was it worth the price?

    1. Tine

Thanks Emily. Good idea, might do a comparison on the sunscreens because I sure have tried out a lot of Asian sunscreens. The BB cream is actually a spray-on!

Okay to be very honest, no makeup brush is worth that amount of money. It was an absolute splurge on my part and even now I still go “what the heck was I thinking spending that crazy amount of money on a small brush?!” It is a beautiful brush though, incredibly soft. Feels like feathers on the skin. But is it worth over $150? Nope. 😛

your hauls womannnnnn..your hauls (wipes drool)..INCREDIBLE HAUL TINE. I looooooooove asian skincare and makeup.I have a special corner in my heart for japanese and korean goodies.I was following your travel pictures daily on instagram because i always wanted to travel japan and korea and i will one day..MAY BE.Did you bring back any skin care secrets …japanese doesn’t seem to age ..(i am nosy ) haha

    1. Tine

I really hope you get to travel to Japan one day Anusha because I’m sure you will absolutely love it. Skincare secrets? Err … erm … no? P But what I did notice of Japanese women is that they’re very wary of sun exposure. Even though it’s stinking hot, they wear arm-length UV-protection gloves. They wear hats, long sleeves, trousers, stockings under shorts … all this in the hot summer, all to stave off sun exposure. Drugstores sell more sunscreens in one section than any other skincare items.

  4. Grace

You certainly know how to shop girl. I agree their customer service is outstanding. Can you do a review on the sun products you bought from pharmacies? I always wanted to try them. Please also let us know where are the best places to shop and eat. Thanks x

    1. Tine

      Hehe, well, I tried. 😛
Sure thing, will do a review on the sunscreens. For places to eat, we used TripAdvisor and Bento.com a lot. Then again, even if you wing it and select any restaurants off the bat, you’ll bound to stumble upon something good. In our last trip, we didn’t plan on what and where to eat and none of what we selected at the spur of the moment was bad. So many of them are THAT good.
As for places to shop, big departmental stores like Takashimaya, Daimaru and Isetan offer tax exemption to tourists so you can claim back your tax right after you shop. For beauty products like what I mentioned in the post, you cannot go to Japan without going to Matsumoto Kiyoshi. They have stores in every town and city. SO GOOD!

  5. Angie

I’ve been lusting after that Suqqu cheek brush for sooo long, everytime I see Lisa Eldridge use it in one of the videos it renews the want all over again!! Cute camera as well!

    1. Tine

I know right? I held off getting it a couple of years ago because I couldn’t justify the price. To be honest, I still couldn’t but this time, I figured oh what the hell, I’m getting it! 😛

  6. Katie L

Hey Tine! Wow you got so much awesome stuff from Japan! Please do an in depth review on the Suqqu brush. The whole beauty section of the internet wants to know! Lols. Sounds like an exaggeration but so true. Never underestimate the reach and influence of Lisa Eldridge ^.^ Oh and the eyebrow pencil and blush too. I’d love to know. I bought the eyebrow powder last time I was in Tokyo and am wondering if I shouldn’t also get the eyebrow pen.

I’m gonna look forward to your sunscreen reviews as well cause I’m so good at applying everyday that I go through them quickly and it gets a bit expensive. (If you ever come to the states again, Target branded sunscreen is surprisingly review as one of the most effective sunscreens in the US market)

That camera is also just too adorable! I’ve been wondering about getting one for myself. Do you know how much you paid?

    1. Tine

Haha thanks Katie! I surely will do a review on the brush. Oh yes, it was definitely Lisa Eldridge’s influence that I spent a butt-load of money on the cheek brush and that eyebrow pen thing that she always used on her models and herself. 😛

So glad to hear that you’re good at applying sunscreens! Seriously, money well spent, I tell ya. Cheaper than expensive anti-aging creams when sunscreens are proven to slow down the aging process. I like the Asian ones (especially from Biore) because they’re incredibly lightweight and not at all oily. Even the ones from Nivea that are sold in Japan are similar to the Japanese sunscreens. It’s strange because most of the Nivea sunscreens here are, while not thick, not even close to that lightweight-ness.

Let’s see, the camera was under 8000yen which is under US$78. Bic Camera and Yodabashi stores in Japan were only selling the Instax Mini 8, 25 and that big one that I can’t remember. I chose the cheapest option, which was the 8. They even had Little Twin Stars, Winnie The Pooh and Rilakkuma cameras! Those are about 1000yen (about $10) more expensive.

  7. Victoria

Welcome back! I love all your photos on Instagram. Japan is indeed so beautiful. My sister when to Osaka last year and she loved it. She said she prefers it to Tokyo. I am salivating at all your products. I cannot believe you bought so many Pilot Frixion pen refills. I am a stationery fan like you and I would probably go nuts in Japan too. LOL. Looking forward to all your reviews on the products 🙂

    1. Tine

Thanks V! Yeah, I went a bit nuts with those pen refills, didn’t I? I literally emptied Takashimaya’s supply. KAKAKAKA!

  8. Allison

Tine, this was fascinating! It was so interesting that most of the products were housed in (I can’t think of the right term) a clear plastic bubble that hangs on pegs rather than in boxes. The blush compact you bought is gorgeous! And I love that camera that you bought. Is it like a Polaroid, meaning you get an actual photo that develops on the film in a minute? We used to use those all the time years ago, and they were fun. Since digital, they have disappeared here, and Polaroid who I believe invented the original technology went out of business. I love the pink and that odd shape. Sounds like you had a great trip!

Some of the items came in boxes but I have to remove them to make them easier to pack. But yeah, a lot of their items hang off pegs like that rather than boxes. Yep, it’s one of those Polaroid-like instant cameras! Quality of photos are quite rubbish but it’s so much fun taking them! 😀

  9. Lara GG

For the past two years, I’ve been buying HadaLabo skincare off ebay and one product I love is their SPF 50 Aqua (or Air, can’t remember) moisturizer. I’d love it if you could review the sunscreens (and perhaps how they compare to HadaLabo’s, if you’ve tried it?)

    1. Tine

Will be doing a post on my favourite Asian sunscreens soon! I’ve tried a couple of Hada Labo’s sunscreens (can’t remember the name right now but one’s in white packaging and the other in blue packaging?) and they’re good. One thing about Japanese sunscreens is that most of them have the same ultra lightweight consistency which I absolutely love.

      1. Lara GG

I’ll be eagerly waiting for that post!

  10. Beth and Beauty

I would love to see reviews on the BB creams, the makeup brush and the face mask! Great haul! I hope to make it to Japan one day!

    1. Tine

They’ll be in a BB Creamology episode soon! 🙂

  11. Ozlicious

I just commented on another post asking about Japanese sunscreen brands but I think I’ve found my answer here! It looks like it’s a matter of just browsing. 🙂

Tine are ANY of the packaging in English? Like, would the SPF rating be in English?

    1. Tine

You’ll be able to see the SPF rating just fine. And the letters UV which would mean sunscreen. But everything else, nope, all in Japanese!

  12. Adriana

    Hi

How much did you buy the polaroid for?

    1. Tine

Hi Adriana, I can’t remember the exact amount but I know it was less than 8000yen.

      1. Rainna

For all the items shown? How about the refill do you roughly know how much you purchase?

The Pilot refills? My son got his favourite too didn’t know Pilot is cheaper in Japan 8)

        1. Tine

Sorry, it’s been a while, I can’t remember how much I spent on all of them. As for the Pilot refills, I think it was around 180yen for a pack of 3. I think. Sorry, it’s been a while!

  13. melody

it would be better if you could list down the price of your haul next time

    1. Tine

I’ll try my best but many a time, it’s not possible especially when I buy more than just a few items. The ones in other currencies are often quite hard to keep track!
