This week, I’m doing a brand focus on L’Oreal to celebrate the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (formerly known as L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival). This brand focus is not sponsored content.
I’ve heard a great deal about the Butterfly Mascara on YouTube-land before I even had a chance to try it out. Its name is different in the US and the UK, I believe, but it’s somewhere along the lines of Butterfly Mascara and the wand is exactly the same so yep, the False Lash Butterfly Mascara in Australia? Same thing.
It’s a bit of a mouthful, isn’t it, calling it the False Lash Butterfly Mascara? For this review, I’ll just call it the Butterfly mascara.
Right, where was I before I rambled on again? Ah yes. The Butterfly mascara was highly raved on YouTube-land and the beauty blogosphere. A number of beauty bloggers have given it their Holy Grail stamp of approval. So … how did it do for me? Does this knock my beloved Australis Voluptulash off the Holy Grail pedestal?
Read on to find out!
This is how the mascara wand is like: it’s not the typical mascara brush that a lot of us are used to. It contains short rubber bristles instead of a brush, curved on one side and even curvier on the other side. My eyelashes aren’t very short but they’re super straight (very difficult to hold a curl) so mascaras with rubber bristles like this are perfect for me. The Butterfly mascara is very easy to use and applies from root to tip very easily.
Okay, I didn’t know this when I started using the mascara but apparently the mascara contains fibres to make your lashes look longer. But I can’t see it! Seriously, is it just my mascara? Or are the fibres hidden so well at the bottom of the tube that I can’t get to?
Anyway, I’ve been using this mascara consistently for a month now and I like it. It doesn’t give me any clumps, doesn’t smudge on my skin at the end of the day and gives me good length. It could be the fibres that are giving my lashes that length but again, where the heck are they?? Ahem, moving on.
As for volume, not so much. What it also doesn’t do is hold a curl so sadly, after a number of hours, my eyelashes go dead straight again. The mascara also has a very wet formula and takes a while to dry. I sneezed once a few seconds after applying the mascara and it smudged my undereye area. Just to be cheeky, does it give me any false lash effect? What do you think? Yeaaaaahhh … no. π
As it doesn’t hold a curl on my lashes, sorry to say, this does not knock my beloved Voluptulash off its Holy Grail status. Having said that, it’s a very decent mascara, especially in giving short lashes good length. Out of the many mascaras L’Oreal has, this is one I’d definitely recommend you try. I’m not too keen on the rest but this one, I’d give it a thumbs up.
L’Oreal False Lash Butterfly Mascara retails at AU$25.95.
What I like about it: Gives decent length, doesn’t clump, doesn’t smudge after many hours of wear.
What I do not like about it: Very wet formula, takes a while to dry, doesn’t hurl a curl well.
Have you tried the Butterfly Mascara? Are you a fan of rubber bristled mascaras? Or do you prefer the regular brush wands?
PS: Apologies for the lame title. I had a short Mariah Carey moment.

Yea I love the voluptulash. It stays on! I was going to ask about removal on this one – does it come off easily? I hate mascaras that make you tug and tug and tug. Is it also a tubing mascara? Sorry for the 101 questions when I hardly even use mascaras these days π

Nope this isn’t a tubing mascara. Very easy to remove but still doesn’t smudge or budge after many hours. By the way, I recently tried out a new mascara by EstΓ©e Lauder (dammit can’t remember the name right this moment) and it’s fab. Not a tubing mascara either and it stays on for ages!
Ooh, I love those comb style rubber mascara wands… But if this takes ages to dry I’ll probably have to pass on it. It’s a shame because I was looking forward to trying it out!

It does take a while to dry compared to many mascaras I’m used to. Having said that, it’s still a very good mascara to use! π
Like you, I like this one but don’t love it. I won’t be repurchasing this one as there are far better mascaras out there. I am not a fan of how wet this mascara is. Great review. thanks for sharing.

Yeah it is wet one, isn’t it? Wasn’t expecting it at all. It’s a good mascara but definitely not a fantastic one.
That wand looks like a relative of the brush for Volume Million which is a mascara I quite enjoy, rubber wands are sometimes my enemy because if I’m tired, clumsy or in a rush and get the wand too close to my lash line they feel a little sharp and scratchy.

Hahaha the same goes for regular mascara brush wands for me. I find those sharp and scratchy! π
