This post was originally written as part of yesterday’s post on how to rouge your cheeks. Unfortunately, I rambled on a bit too long on that post that it was starting to look like a thesis so I thought I’d break it up and continue today instead. So it looks like there’s going to be 7 episodes of the Rudiments of Rouge, not 6. π
A question Allison asked on day 2 was: how do you do to fix blush mistakes?
Ahh … if I had a dollar for every time I overdo my blush (especially when lighting is poor), let’s just say I’ll be quite a wealthy lady now. So, the question is: if you’ve made a mistake with your blush, how do you fix it?
If I’m outdoors and only just realised that I went a bit too heavy handed with the blush (this happens when I do my makeup under insufficient lighting) or if it wasn’t the colour I wanted, I do the quick thing “whip the tissue out and wipe” method. Yep, utilise those tissues!
Wrap a piece of clean tissue around your fingers and gently wipe the blush off. The reason I wrap the tissue around my fingers and not just scrunge the tissue up and wipe is that I get a lot more control over how much makeup I remove. I just want to remove as much blush as possible without disturbing my base makeup. Don’t rub too hard (you’re not scrubbing the toilet) as that will cause your skin to redden and it’ll confuse you as to whether you’re rubbing blush or your skin off.
After that, I like to do a quick and gentle blot of the area with a piece of facial blotter to remove any excess oil on the cheeks. I don’t have oily cheeks but you never know. Next I powder the area with face powder. If you’ve removed just enough blush but still have traces of it, the powder will help set it.
If I’m at home and have time to fix my blush mistake, I just do a quick swipe of my cheeks with some Bioderma Crealine H2O. It cleans so easily, dries quickly and allows me to do a quick touch-up of foundation and powder before working on my blush again.
There you go, easy peasy ways to fix those blush boo-boos. No need to worry about being stuck with too much blush! π
What about you? How do you fix your blush mistakes?
Hi Tine
Thanks so much for your series Rudiments of Rouge. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them all π Especially about where you should apply rouge, as I previously used to smile and apply to the apples of my cheeks…. Only to find my rouge looking very displaced and wondering why it looked a bit off.
I am very much looking forward on your blog about face contouring…. I need all the help I can get π
Thanks Claire. I’m so glad you enjoyed the series π
I’ll work on a contouring post soon! x
Thanks for the advice Tine! I ll usually just use my fingers to fix it ( don’t think it’s a good idea though) .
My pleasure, Michelle. Just use a piece of tissue, wipe and repowder. Easy peasy π
This has happened to me so many times! I have very pale skin, so it’s very easy for me to overdo blush. I usually soften it with a layer of translucent powder, but I will try this method next time. Thanks for the tip.

I prefer not to powder over too much blush because it makes the skin too powdery. In humid conditions, the cheeks tend to look cakey. If possible, I prefer to remove them first π
I take a kabuki brush and buff it off! Works like a dream.
If there is still too much blush, I swipe coloured loose powder, or use a foundation compact, and pat over the blush. The con of this method is that it adds more powder to the face, and since I have dry skin, I can look extra matte and cakey. So I will normally spray a makeup setting spray over, to return the dewiness.
But all these were in the past. I tend to not make mistakes as much nowadays, because I count how many times I swipe the blush, and how many times I pat the blush on my cheeks. This way, even with poor lighting, I roughly get it even and correct.

That’s a great idea, Jyoan. I forgot to add that in! Buff it off with a clean kabuki brush, easy peasy π I still find it fascinating that you actually count the number of times you pat/swirl/etc blush on your cheeks. I have to try that out to ensure even application π
Hehe, I do the tissue trick as well… but usually because I put too much bronzer, haha! Just wrap a facial tissue around your 3 fingers and gently swirl around, the blush will be all gone! π

Hahaha there was an incident where a makeup artist bronzed my face so badly once; my face and my neck were two completely different colours. Like, really obvious very fair and very tanned! I didn’t want to offend by telling her she’s making me look like an oompa loompa so as soon as I stepped out of the departmental store, the tissues couldn’t come out quick enough. I was frantically wiping everything off. It didn’t even matter that I was stripping all of my makeup off π
I also use a tissue when I apply too much blush(and bronzer too) Thanks for the good advice. Really liked your idea of using the BioCreama Crealine H20.

Thanks! The Bioderma Crealine H20 is amazing at quick removal of makeup and reapplication. It dries very quickly (doesn’t even contain alcohol), allowing you to fix mistakes quickly too π
I actually use some HD powder (e.l.f. or makeup forever) to lighten blush mistakes. Unless I’ve really put on too much blush over a wide area – then I would wipe some off, but my blush mistake is often putting too much on the apples of my cheeks so just some HD powder would lighten the look and I’m good to go.

Good idea, thanks for your suggestion Yu Ming. I forgot about my HD powder π
Me? If I’m at home, I usually do a quick dusting of loose powder. That usually helps to tone down my blush colour a little bit more.

Good one, Norlin. It’s not what I’d personally do but it’s a popular method for toning blush down π
I used to used my fingers and the tissue method but I now use loose powder to tone down blush mistakes. I also use Jyoan’s way of applying blush in which I count the number of times I swipe my blush on each cheeks and make sure I have equal amount of blush on my brush before placing it on my cheeks. After doing this for sometime, it definitely reduces the blush mistakes that I make π
Hahahah go you and Jyoan! I’ve never even thought of counting the number of times I apply my blush on each cheek! I really have to try it out now π
Thanks so much, Tine, for addressing my question. Now why didn’t I think of the tissue solution, but even if I did think of it, I wouldn’t have thought of wrapping it around my fingers! Great idea! I tried brushing it off but no luck. It’s tissues for me next time I get too heavy handed or don’t swirl & tap enough. Love this series!

Thanks Allison, and thanks for the idea. I originally did not include fixing blush mistakes in the series but it’s such a good question that I just had to write about it π x
Wow, that’s great! Thank you for all the great info π

So interesting and useful blush guide! Thank you very much!
What I do to fix my blush is something I learnt from Pixiwoo’s videos. I usually apply my foundation with a brush, so if IΒ΄ve overdone my blush, I just retouch it with that same brush and the tiny bit of foundation that’s left. At least it works for me.
(Sorry if I made mistakes, english is not my mother tongue)
Hola! Thanks for dropping by π
I saw that video of Pixiwoo’s, that’s a great idea!
