This is a question I get very often either on Bloggie Wednesdays or via email. I thought instead of just answering them in comments and emails, I could write a post on it as well. Just how do you get more readers to your blog, especially if you’re starting from scratch?
When I first started beauty blogging, I knew I had at least one reader and that was Paris B. She was the one who encouraged me to give beauty blogging a go. At that time, I didn’t think much about having a lot of readers. I just wanted to write about beauty-related topics that I know of. I didn’t have to worry about working with brands or anything like that because at that time in Malaysia, it just wasn’t done. I was happy with my handful of readers; it was like writing to a group of friends you’ve never met.
Of course, it came to a point when I wanted to reach out to more people. I’d love to have more readers to my blog. I still do; heck, who doesn’t? If I’ve been blogging for 6 months and I only have 10 readers, I wouldn’t help but feel a tad disheartened.
There are many methods on how to get my readers to your blog. These are some of my tested ones that worked for me. Perhaps they’ll work for you too. 🙂
Comment but don’t spam
This is a common method that most bloggers will tell you that work and I don’t disagree. Commenting on blogs you like will in time bring more readers to your site. Leaving your footprint on their part of the internets will bring some back to you too. On the other hand, please do leave valid comments that are relevant to the article. I’m really not a fan of comments like “Great post!” and then leaving the blog link behind because it tells me that this person just wants to leave his/her link on my blog and nothing more. There’s no value to that comment and it just looks like spam.
It doesn’t bother me if you leave a relevant comment on my blog post and then sign off with your name and blog link. I’m not fussy about that at all. The only thing that shits me are all those “Great article! Come visit my site!” comments with blog links. In a split second, the blogger can simply mark you as spam and delete your comment, thus wasting your time anyway. Leave relevant comments and don’t spam. In time, you’ll see people coming to your blog.
Be active on social media
I think I first signed on to Twitter in 2007 but didn’t even start using the account until a year or two later. It made a big difference to me when I started using Twitter more because I didn’t only discover a lot more blogs, other people discovered mine. I can’t begin to even tell you what a difference Twitter made on my blog. I’m not even talking about brand-blogger discovery; it’s organic traffic from other like-minded bloggers that stumble upon your blog on Twitter, follow you, see the blog, like it and become your readers too.
I find that social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and particularly Instagram allow you to be more candid about yourself, that it shows a more personal side of you that you may not necessarily show on your blog. People tend to resonate with others better that way. I find that I get more readers out of these social media platforms than just typical Google searches.
On the other hand, don’t be a Negative Nancy on social media
If your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc have your blog bio and link in them, then these social media platforms that you’re on represents you and your blog. If a blogger is always whinging on Twitter, complaining on Facebook and posting “me so sad” pictures on Instagram, it’s sadly not going to get that blogger very far. You want to share your passion and interests with like-minded people, not read their complaints repeatedly. I used to complain quite a lot when I first started out on Twitter (because hey, I can finally complain with no one telling me to shut up! :P) and only realised a few years later that that’s not going to help my blog if my tweets represent me and my blog.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to vent your frustrations online but if you read your timeline and realised that 8 out of 10 updates are negative, you might want to consider starting a new account just for that. I want to start one where I just want to scream and shout. No one to follow me and no one to know who I am where I can just let my frustrations out. How cathartic would that be? 🙂
Join Twitter chats
This was something I discovered over a year ago. Twitter chats are getting more popular and it’s a great way to participate in something you can learn or offer advice. It’s also a fantastic way to gain new readers. If you’re unsure of what Twitter chats are, it’s basically a discussion on Twitter, set on a specific date and time and people chat with a specific hashtag. A good Twitter chat is one hosted by Blog Trends (using the hashtag #blogtrends). If you’d like to learn more about blogging, I highly recommend you join in (if not, just read the tweets with that hashtag). There’s a lot to learn from other bloggers and a good way to get your blog out there too. I’ve gained a number of new readers from the Blog Trends chats alone. 🙂
Have something to offer to your readers
By something to offer I don’t mean just running giveaways and competitions. In fact, I find that running too many giveaways and competitions hurt the blog more than help gain readers. This is something I discovered a few months ago. I’ll discuss more on this on another Bloggie Wednesday.
If you’re good at something, why not show it off on your blog? Are you skilled at graphic design? Offer free downloads of pretty images for your readers. Are you social media/blogging/etc savvy? Offer some tips and tricks to your readers. Are you good at makeup application? Show it off by offering tutorials on your blog. Are you great at cooking? Offer some recipes to download for your readers. You get my drift. Give your readers something to come back for. 🙂
Meet other bloggers!
For me, this is the best part of blogging. Being able to meet other bloggers who share the same interests and passion as you do is just gold. I’ve met some of my dearest friends through blogging. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a social butterfly (I’m not). Try one or two first before meeting them in a group. It’s so much fun talking makeup with people who enjoys it as much as you do. 🙂
That’s it! These are just some tips and tricks for you if you’d like to know more on how to gain readers for your blog, especially if you’re starting from scratch. Don’t be discouraged if things aren’t going as smoothly or quickly as you hoped. Some bloggers hit the wave and gain traffic a lot more quickly. Most bloggers (including me) are more of what I call a slow cooker. It takes a while for things to happen but when they do, they’re absolutely delicious. 😛
If you have any tips and tricks on how you gain more readers for your blog, please share it with us in the comments.
Good luck in your blogging journey!
Great tips Tine and I really agree. Also tell people in real life that you have a blog, your friends can help spread the word for you

Thanks Christina! I forgot to add that in! When I first started blogging, I didn’t tell my friends and family. Family, I understand because they thought it was a waste of time (funny story: dad texted me twice in the span of a few months telling me he’s proud of my blogging!!). I don’t know why I didn’t tell my friends. Heck, why would I prefer to have strangers reading my blog and not my friends too, right?
What a big difference it made because they helped me spread the word too. Y’know, ‘cos they’re obligated under the FRIEND rules. Kakakakakaka!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. My favourite is meeting fellow bloggers too! It’s really refreshing and nice to meet people who you know are just as obsessed as you are lol! I find the people I know in person are not really into the whole blogging/Internet thing, so it’s really nice to be able to share that with someone. And getting new readers in the process is a bonus! 🙂

I know, right? The first time I met other bloggers, I was apprehensive. It’s like meeting people you kinda know but don’t. After that first time, the rest is history.
PS: AHEM. When am I meeting you? AHEM. 😛
Thanks, Tine, for the encouragement about hanging in there on Twitter. I’ve gotta work harder to make it a useful source. So far, I think I still have only 15 followers on Twitter, lol. I’ve found that Bellashoot has been a useful replacement for Hellocotton for me, and has brought me some new readers; also, some from SheSaidBeauty. Related to a question I posted last Wednesday about your & my drop in Google Analytics stats, when I get “referral” traffic to my site from another blog, GA just about always lists the “time spent” on my site as 00:00 which is kind of a bummer. I think I must have set up GA wrong. Also,I checked the stats from my cPanel with my GA stats, and they’re from 2 different planets. Do yours match?
PS Someday I will send you a recipe for Boston Baked Beans. They’re heaven lol!

Hi Allison,
Sometimes, Twitter may not work. I find that there are times when my Facebook followers engaged with me a lot more than Twitter. Twitter is instant; once the person misses the tweet after the first 200 tweets, then it’s pretty much gone. As for Facebook, it will still be there. Don’t be disheartened; try other forms of social media platforms instead.
As for GA, yeah mine pretty much matches. I have the Jetpack Wordpress stats and GA stats on my WP and even though their numbers vary, the difference is only about 20 to 50. I.e not a big difference. Checked mine on cPanel as well. It actually logs more visits than GA! Don’t know how accurate it is. I think you should definitely check your GA; you may have configured it wrong. You shouldn’t get 00:00.
PS: Aww thanks! Not a fan of baked beans myself but my husband is. I’d love to make it for him 🙂
I love your bloggie wednesdays. Although I am only a reader, I get so much insights into the blogging world through these posts. I remember discovering your blog from the comments you made on Paris B’s blog so I totally agree that this method really works 🙂
Aww thanks Victoria. I’m so glad it gives you an insight to the blogging world. Perhaps it might make you want to blog yourself? 😛
Thank you so much for sharing your blogging knowledge Tine. As a relatively new blogger I am like a sponge when it comes to tips to help me grow! One of things I love the most about blogging is the wonderful people that you meet over the internet. I am hoping that one day I may meet more of you in person!

My pleasure, Kate! I hope to meet you one day too! x
Meeting other bloggers in Melbourne has been a really fun experience for me. It’s terribly scary but it has always turned out to be heaps of fun. And I’ve gotten some lovely comments and advice about my blog too, which I really appreciate.
I think negativity on social media is a very good point, and like you I fell into that habit of venting when I first started. I really cringe when I remember some of my rants now!

Haha I know right? Best thing about blogging, I tell ya. Glad I met you in person! 🙂
My early tweets are mostly rants too. Yikes!
Wonderful tips! It is so important to be active on social media, and keep up to date with other peoples blogs, including commenting!
I’m yet to meet any fellow bloggers, but am hoping that will open a few doors too when I do!

Thanks! I hope you get to meet some fellow bloggers soon, especially the ones whom you follow and follow you. It’s so much fun! 🙂
Same with Victoria, I get to know your blog from your comment on PB post. In fact, all the blogs I’m reading now are from links in comments. I’ve just discovered the world of beauty blogging at that time and want more of it. Like what u wrote and here I am, commenting on your post whenever it hits me… Hihi.
Aww thanks Bugs! 😀
Fab tips there and I totally agree with not being a Negative Nancy. Nobody likes too much negativity in life and what more on social media. PLUS, if your profile is public, it just gives brands and PR a bad impression of you too! 😉
Norlin recently posted..The Truth About Serums
Agree! Can’t deal with Twitter whingers, especially when 80% of the tweets are complaints and more complaints. There’s enough negativity going around already, don’t need more on Twitter 😛
Such great tips Tine! I really need to take some of your advice, I’ve been such a bad blogger hehe

Hahaha no way! You’re still very consistent with blogging! 😛
I always wanted to ask you how to gain readers but I was hesitant now I am glad you have given some really helpful tips .I love blogging I don’t have much followers but it makes me really happy when I think some people read my blog and find my posts helpful haha it may sound strange but every time I see a new follower my heart starts jumping with joy :)I find it a bit annoying when someone comments on my blog and says ooh you have a great blog I love it will you follow me ? then I will follow you too , I mean if they really like my blog why don’t they just follow it or if they don’t find it interesting enough to follow then why they ask me to follow them first and then they will follow me ?
Meeting with bloggers is a great idea I am sure it would be so much fun when a whole room is filled with makeup addicts 🙂 Ah I wish one day I will be able to meet you because from your posts and replies to our comments you seem like such a sweet and genuine person <3

Those sort of comments don’t add value to the blog. Most of the time, I’d just let it go because I understand that it isn’t easy to gain readers. Most of us don’t get to hit the blogging jackpot of being totally famous and have 1 million pageviews in a few months. It’s a slow and uphill climb. Unfortunately people who comment like this (“follow me!”) don’t realise that the more they do this, the more people will NOT follow them because really, it’s just spam.
I’d love to meet you someday too! 🙂
Great post!
LOL…. seriously always love your Bloggie Wednesday posts. I’ve always been really bad with leaving comments on blogs I read – I need to get back into it.
And couldn’t agree more re meeting other bloggers – I miss my #mbbe ladies *sob*
Thanks poo poo! We miss you too! *hugs*
Really great tips. I think people underestimate twitter, but it’s definitely a great way to meet like-minded people and promote your posts! (Again, without being spammy!)
Thanks love. Twitter has opened a lot of doors for me and helped me tremendously in spreading the word about my blog posts 🙂
Thanks Tine for the post, can I make a request pretty please? How about how to engage and get people to comment on your blog?
I know I get readers, but no-one wants to comment 🙁 (ok, I had to do the sad smiley!).
I realise I am new to blogging, and most likely my posts or content aren’t exactly inviting people to post. But it would still be good to hear from an experienced blogger on how you overcame this hurdle (if it was one) 🙂 (note, smiley face! lol)
Veronica recently posted..Photoshoot – Autumn (Part 2)
Hi Veronica,
I understand what you mean and it’s frustrating at times. Sometimes I’d write what I thought was a great post (spent a lot of time researching, photographing and writing) only to find that I only get a couple of comments. I’m like, ehh? I thought it was good! 🙁
These days, engaging with readers isn’t just about comments anymore. Try posting a pic or two in that post on Facebook and see if you get any likes or comments. Try pinning them on Pinterest and see if you get any repins. Those are considered reader engagement too. It’s not just about leaving comments anymore 🙂
Try asking questions at the end of each post, asking people what they think, if there’s something they like or don’t like about a product you wrote about. Check your Google Analytics keywords and see what search terms people are using that lands them on your website. See if you can come up with a post on those search terms.
This is a great question and I think I’ll do a BW post on this 🙂
Re BW post – brilliant!
Great post!!
LOL

Where’s your link?? 😛

Aww try one-on-one meets or bring a friend along. A big group might be a bit overwhelming and intimidating at first. But once you get into it, I’m sure you’ll love it. Have fun and good luck! 🙂 x
As always, some great tips Tine 🙂 I often get so overwhelmed with reading blog posts that I forget to comment and let the author know I’ve dropped by (not in a HEY READ MY BLOG way though). I enjoy reading comments from readers, so I need to remind myself of this somethmes x

It’s an open Facebook page for Melbourne Beauty Meets 🙂 As a lot of us already know each other, we usually just jump on Twitter, asks if anyone wants to meet up for something, and then it begins. If not, then we usually meet at beauty events 🙂
Hi, it’s really weird. I actually landed on your blog by googling images. I was captivated by the content of your post. Thanks for the awesome tips, especially the ones pertaining to Twitter. I’ve always wondered what techniques works best for Twitter when getting your content out there. Also, I’m in total agreement of not sharing anything negative. It only throws an un-favorable reflection or shade and attracts those who may feel the same dreary way. I am allergic to the negatives and favor everything positive and of value. Guess that’s why I landed here…LoL.
Hahaha hello hello Beverly! Thanks very much for your kind words!
Twitter has become a complaining/ranting ground these days, which I’m sure you’ve noticed. Things you wouldn’t normally say in front of the person, well, people say it on Twitter. While it helps and maybe gets the attention of the person-in-charge quicker, at the end of the day, it’s tiring to see rant after rant, complaint after complaint on Twitter. It’s tiresome. 🙁
