Bloggie Wednesdays: The Day In Life of This Beauty Blogger

Bloggie Wednesdays: The Day In Life of This Beauty Blogger

At the beginning of the year, I decided to take the plunge and do blogging full-time. I’ve been focusing so much time on blogging the past year that I’ve decided to move on and put my jewelry on the back seat for a while. Plus, on top of blogging, I’ve decided to take on freelance blogging projects as well (helping clients with WordPress, web hosts, etc) so I’ve been quite the busy bee.

Some of you have asked me how I spend my days and I thought I’d share that with you today. I’m sure you’ve read how other bloggers’ days works and that there’s no fixed daily schedule. It’s true. I don’t have one either. I could be working on the blog all day without even leaving the house at all or out all day for meetings, events and/or more writing. Before you go “wahh she gets to attend so many events!“, let me clarify that that’s not true. In Melbourne, I get the opportunity to attend a media event once every 2-3 weeks. We’ll be lucky to have one once a month! πŸ™‚

For the days that I am home, I do try to keep to a schedule if I can as I’m more productive with one. When there’s no structure being self-employed, one has to create the structure as best as he/she can and that’s what I do.

7.30 – 8.30am

  • Wake up, brush my teeth, have breakfast with Tim
  • Catch up on the news on TV and the Internet

8.30 – 10.30am

  • Review my to-do list of the day (I’m a list addict. I probably have lists for my lists).
  • Write and reply emails.
  • Plan and review my blog content for the day and week.
  • Photograph products or myself if I need to show the makeup on the face (this is the best time to take photographs for me because I get enough light through my window but not as strong as the noon light)

10.30am – 12.30pm

  • This is my best time for writing. Once the photos are done, I’m ready to write. I like to get images out of the way first before tackling the words.
  • Post new blog updates on Twitter and Facebook at about noon (this is when most of my traffic is having lunch)

12.30pm – 1.30pm

  • Have lunch. I normally cook my lunch and seldom do takeaways. I used to live next to and opposite lots of takeaways. I had so much takeaway lunches back then that it’s no wonder I gained so much weight! Now that I don’t live near any takeaways (pizza joints don’t count since I’m not a fan and won’t eat it unless I have no choice), I like to cook my own lunch.
  • Catch up on Twitter and Facebook. I don’t have social media switched on unless it’s to reply tweets or comments on Facebook. I do cheat from time to time, which is why you might see me on Twitter or Facebook earlier πŸ˜›

1.30 – 3.00pm

  • Write and reply emails to bloggers, brands, potential advertisers, etc.
  • Go through my blog comments and reply them.
  • Continue with blog writing and editing of images if those aren’t completed.

3.00pm – 5.30pm

  • Work on client’s blogs. My writing juices are usually out by this time so it’s a good time for me to remove my creative hat and put on my technical one. This is when I’ll need more coffee. πŸ˜›
  • If there are no projects for me to work on, I take photos if the sun is still out (even on sunny days, I get an overcast through the home office window that is perfect for photos. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work during winter months when the days are shorter and the sun sets at 5pm).

5.30pm – 8.30pm

  • If there’s an event, I usually leave for one by this time as it takes me about an hour to get to the city by bus and train. As our household only has 1 car, I rely heavily on public transportation (have for over 5 years now). I’m usually back in time for a takeaway dinner.
  • If there isn’t an event on that day, then I continue with client work till 6pm, which is when I catch up on the evening news and start preparing our dinner.

Thursdays are usually my going-out days (excluding any events, appointments or errands to run) so I’ll usually be at my favourite cafe with my iPad and writing. I find that I’m a lot more productive and write better when I’m not always at home. People-watching and window-shopping (well, most of the time, it’s just the window :P) have planted a lot of inspiration and content that you see on the blog. You know the “A Beauty Blogger’s Media Kit” ebook? Wrote that in 1.5 hours at Coffee Bean. πŸ˜›

Fridays are mail pickup days. Most of my blogging-related mail, magazine subscriptions and so on go to my PO box. I don’t give my home address away unless I’ve worked with the brand long enough to trust that they won’t give my details away or rob me. Plus people steal my mail. Oh yeah, I’ve had that a number of times.

I don’t blog on weekends unless it’s necessary. Weekends are for me to “live” :P. It’s also a good time for me to tidy up the home office because throughout the week, the place will look like it’s been hit with a hurricane. Yikes.

That’s my rough daily and weekly schedule and how my days as a beauty blogger work. Not very interesting at all and definitely not glamourous as some people might think. In fact, it can be a lot less glam than regular office work because most of the time, I’ll be at home in front of the computer in my pyjamas! (the posties can attest to that) πŸ˜›

I hope you’ve enjoyed an insight to what my days are like. What’s yours like?

My days are similar to yours, but swap some blog/client work for uni work, ha ha! I finish uni in a bit over a week, so I’ll be full time blogging until I get a full time job – wish blogging actually paid for the hours we put in, ha ha! x

Thanks Grace! I’m just a happy WIFI leech at Coffee Bean. Kakakakakaka!

Lovely work space! I work full time and simply blog when I can. I was trying to stick to a ‘blog schedule’, but it’s easier if I just ‘wing-it’.

I down loaded your blogger media kit for some idea! Thanks for posting the link.

Mmm… so disciplined Tine! πŸ˜€ I do all that you do crammed into 1 day – Sunday LOL! Its a frenzy of phototaking for the week and I do my writing over the week, usually sneaking a little time off work to do so. I’ve no plans to go at blogging full time but I’m very happy that you have been able to, and to make it work. Kudos!

Thanks Peebs! I’m working hard to make the whole blogging full-time thing work (which you do when you’re self-employed anyway), so fingers crossed πŸ™‚ The blog client work helps too πŸ™‚

I work from home too, when I’m not travelling to client sites. For me, my blog is a hobby but I do write best after 5 pm πŸ™‚

Love your desk – I sit next to a window too!

    Thank you for sharing!

As someone who tries to squeeze in blogging around a full time job, friends, family and exercise – it is interesting to see how people go about it on a much more regular basis!

    Love your desk πŸ™‚

Kudos for going full time, Tine!
I juggle a full time job, leaving the house by 8am and reaching home around 8pm Mondays to Fridays. Taking care of 2 toddlers occupy the rest of my time. I usually take photos on Saturday mornings when my kids are watching cartoons. Then, I write on weeknights, after the kids are asleep. So, I usually go to bed after midnight. I don’t know how I can keep blogging regularly if I didn’t love it so much!

  10. Rute

Well, I hope I was half organized as you!
I’m a pro at procrastinating for the blog, it makes me kinda upset, cause I know I could get my blog to be a little better and get more traffic, but I am just SO lazy to do posts, but when I do, I like it, I should be more disciplined, I know πŸ™

But I loved to see how you organize your day, more bloggers should do posts like this, for the lazy bloggers like me to feel a little more inspired πŸ™‚

Thanks Rute! I love reading posts like this on blogs so I thought I’d do one too πŸ™‚

I know what you mean by being lazy to write posts. About 3 years ago, I came to a point where I almost gave up on blogging altogether because quite frankly, I couldn’t be arsed. I wrote on average about 3-5 posts a months. A friend, who’s also a blogger, helped me out of my rut. I think being around like-minded people helps, even if it’s just online. If not for her, I don’t think I’d have continued the next 3 years.

Good luck in your blogging journey πŸ™‚ x

I think I’m one of those who asked about your day as a blogger or something. I have to say, you’re an early riser (which I’m not unfortunately :P)! It’s good to know what goes on behind the scenes, in this case behind the screen πŸ˜€

Thanks for this insight Tine. I’m glad to know that someone else relies on their to-do list as well πŸ™‚

I’m considering getting a P.O. box too because It seems that my packages and mag subscriptions go missing. I thought I was just getting paranoid…Scary that people would steal mail :s

    1. Tine

To be honest, I got a PO box just because my mail kept getting stolen. In fact, I once bought a Moleskine notebook, it came in a padded envelope, the postie stuffed it in the mail slot (half in, half out), and some moron ripped the padded envelope from the outside and nicked my notebook! All I had was a ripped envelope πŸ™
After that, I quickly rented a PO box and had most of my parcels sent there. I have a good relationship with my post office so all I needed to do was rent the smallest box they have and any parcels I receive will go to the post office. I only need to pick up my mail from the post office, which is so much safer than posties throwing random parcels over my gate (another peeve of mine – they do it even with the big orange tape that says FRAGILE on the parcels!). Oh, and my magazine subscriptions were missing too so they also go to my PO box.

  14. Jade

I can’t say enough how much I enjoy your blog Tine, I just checked out your jewellery store too, so many lovely things! Thanks for sharing your blogging routine πŸ™‚

  16. Swati

hey Tine…wow, you got into fulltime blogging. that’s great yaar. i was also thinking of shifting to wordpress in some time (count a year or more). i would surely take your help πŸ˜€ apparently blogger has a upper limit for the diskspace of snaps you can upload per blog whether domain bought or running on blogspot so if i reach that limit il have to move. and, yeah, you are so right about going to cafes and working or my favorite is reading a book πŸ™‚
i have one question to ask – m confused between whether i should take a tablet or a phone. i wanted something on which i can blog easily. i know tablet sounds preferable but honestly i don’t want to spend a lot of money on them as i am not a gadget freak. besides i can use the money on lens πŸ˜€ or should i take a phone and blog on it??? your advises are always appreciated πŸ™‚

    1. Tine

Thanks Swati. Let me know if you need my services to help you switch to WP (just email me).
As for blogging on tablet or phone, this really does boil down to personal preferences. I don’t blog from my phone. Even though it’s quite a big one (Samsung Note 2), I still find it fiddly to type. What I prefer to do is write on a tablet, email the notes to myself, then transfer those notes to a blog post on a desktop. Sounds like a lot of work but it’s actually easier that way because I do get more inspiration to write when I’m on the go. I don’t blog on the tablet because I still prefer to do the tweaking and editing on my desktop.
If you don’t already blog from your phone or tablet, to be honest, there’s no need to buy one if you’re not into them. Unless you carry the tablet with you when you go out, if it’s not something you’re into anyway, it might turn out to be a white elephant. Me, I’m addicted to my iPad but I still blog on my desktop πŸ™‚
Yikes, I’ve rambled a lot, haven’t I? Long story short, save the money for a lens πŸ˜‰

      1. Swati

hey Tine…checked the comment today only so thanks a lot for the detailed reply πŸ™‚
yeah, even i get inspiration in the oddest of the times!! so, i was wondering if the tablet would help me write down the basic post and then editing and final previewing and scheduling can be done on the laptop. and, its easier to carry everywhere so that makes life easy! will let you know what i decide finally coz a lot would depend on cost and other things and yeah lens are anyways the priority πŸ˜€

sneaking a bit off time from work!

10am-8pm, monday to fridays, back to back with work meetings, and whatever else needed to be done with work.

alternate saturday (10am-2pm) more work! ahaha, and then i go home to my dad’s.

if i don’t work on weekends, i’d back at home and play games. sleep. spend time with dad and sis. and everything else that’s not work related and doesn’t involve the pc/ phone.

yeah, so i don’t read blogs/ tweet/ fb/ instagram as much, nor write/ edit picture much. don’t have that sort of time these days. i wish if I could just hate my work so I can work on the blog and do other things, but the unfortunate thing is that I do like what I am doing for a living right now! πŸ˜‰
