It’s no secret on the blog that my go-to foundation for the past few years have been Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation. It’s lightweight and looks good on my combination skin. I’ve been trying foundations and BB creams (y’know, because it’s all for the blog ;)) since then but I always go back to the Healthy Mix Serum foundie when I need my skin to look extra perky.
This was up till a few months ago when the new Rimmel Match Perfection Light Perfecting Radiance foundation landed on my desk for review. I used it a few times and decided to fully test its capabilities for the 7 days of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF). In case you were wondering, nope, I didn’t only just use L’Oreal makeup that whole week. I cheated on L’Oreal A LOT. 😛
Oh Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum, I think you’ve definitely met your match. Pun intended.
Description:
Traceless coverage foundation with Advanced Smart-Tone technology for perfectly flawless skin under any light. Enhanced with Sapphire Radiance for an illuminating glow. Lasts all day.
In terms of its texture and consistency, it’s mighty similar to Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum. It’s very light, quite watery (so you’ll have to shake the bottle well before use) and applies on the skin like melted butter on toast. It’s non-greasy and controlled the oiliness on my T-zone well. The foundation comes to a dewy finish. I don’t normally fancy foundations with dewy finish but for some reason, I’m A-okay with this one. It doesn’t have a strong floral fragrance like Bourjois’; it’s still slightly floral but subtle.
The shade I’m using is 200 Soft Beige
What I really like about it (no, LOVE) is how good it looks on the skin as the hours go by. Now we all know that foundations and BB creams look better after about an hour on the skin, but this one glows. It’s not a greasy glow but a beautiful, healthy and youthful-skin radiance on the skin. It makes my blush look more natural on the cheeks.
During LMFF week, I had days when I had this foundation on for well over 10 hours. When I finally removed my makeup close to midnight, I could see that I had at least 80% of it on my skin (with no drag marks). I’ve also had days when I had this on for 2 hours, had the makeup fully removed and put on again for the evening. Throughout the week, I experienced no breakouts.
Truth be told, I haven’t been reaching for the Healthy Mix Serum gel foundation ever since I used Rimmel’s Match Perfection. The two foundations are so similar that it’s very difficult to pinpoint on which one is better. At the end of the day, I just think the Rimmel one looks better on me after an hour compared to Bourjois’. Not only that, it’s also cheaper ($17.95 vs. Bourjois’ $32). However, when I’m traveling, I’m sticking to the Bourjois. The bottle is lighter than Rimmel’s and I’d need all the weight allowance I can get.
It’s not goodbye, Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum gel foundie. You will always have a very special place in my heart, makeup drawers and travel bag. I shall come back to you soon. For now, I think I’ve found my almost (98%?) perfect match.
Rimmel Match Perfection Light Perfecting Radiance foundation retails at $17.95 for 30ml and is available at Priceline and other leading pharmacies.
What I like about it: Very similar to if not better than my favourite-and-practically-Holy-Grail Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation. Leaves a flawless yet natural finish to the skin. Contains SPF that is not paltry.
What I do not like about it: Nothing. Even I’m surprised. Okay, maybe I wish it was in a lighter bottle but really, I’m just nitpicking here.
Have you tried the Rimmel Match Perfection foundation before? Did you like it as much as I did? If you’ve also tried Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation, how did you think it compared to Rimmel’s Match Perfection?

I love this one too 😀 😀 😀 Cheapie Holy Grail stuff, this is.

Good stuff, right? Whaddyaknow. HG from Rimmel 😛
Wow this sounds like perfect. It looks nice on you but still really natural looking. I’ve never tried this or the Bourjois one that you mentioned, but now I want to.

This one is cheaper than the Bourjois one but if you can, I’d still recommend you check both out. They’re very good foundations 🙂
I’ve been resisting buying this for awhile now but your review has definitely tempted me. You always make me want to spend money Tine! 😛

Kekekeke I think I should also add “enabler” to my name too, eh? 😛
Jeezus, it really costs that much there? I know I asked how anyone could spend so much on makeup before, but now it makes more sense. The prices for designer labels like Chanel makeup are about in line with what things cost here in the States, but that foundation is a little under $5 here. No wonder!
I may have to try that foundation, now that mine has mysteriously disappeared. I was using… Maybelline’s Age Rewind, I think. Covers all the red in my face! But how heavy a makeup it is. Almost mask-like on me. -_- Rimmel might be my next choice. I’m glad you found one that works so well for you!

Sigh, tell me about it. I’ve lost track about the number of times I’ve whinged about the cut-throat prices of cosmetics in Australia compared to other parts of the world. It beats the hell out of me how drugstore prices can be so high. Revlon here is only about $15 cheaper than Clinique. The prices are equivalent (without currency conversion) to Malaysian prices. That means cosmetics here are almost 3x more expensive than Malaysia much less in the US.
A number of brands have lowered their prices and it’s a very good thing but until all brands lower their prices too, I think it’s going to be difficult buying drugstore makeup here.
Anyway, this is a lovely foundation and I’m glad it’s so similar to my favourite Bourjois foundation. When I run out of the latter, it’s going to be cheaper for me to just use this instead.
Well, if you want something from the US and can’t get it online, I’ll be happy to hunt for it. I work next to a mall, my friend lives by a different mall, and there’s drug stores all around, so it’s not a big deal.

Aww thank you for the offer, that’s very kind of you 🙂 x
Tine I asked you in Twitter but better here in a comment, which is the darkest shade for this foundation? Please tell me that is dark enough for my NC42 skin, after read your review I’ll search it but also take a look to the Bourjois one (I think my shade will be #57).

Hi Efrain, the darkest shade available in Australia is, I think, Sand. You can check it out here: http://au.rimmellondon.com/products/face/match-perfection-foundation
As for whether it fits your skin tone, might I suggest trying findation.com? You can input your current foundations and see an approximate shade for the foundation you’re looking for. Good luck! 🙂
Ugh!! I thought I’d found my Holy Grail foundation and here you are tempting me with another! 😛 I love the Bourjois Healthy Mix as you do so something tells me I’d like this, if I can find a shade – I’ll go look at Rimmel next time I’m out 😀

Hee hee la la laaaa. I also can enable. BAHAHAHAHAH! 😛
LOL-ed at the cheating part of the story, sounds like drama 🙂
The Rimmel one looks a little darker on the bottle and the skin comparatively to Bourjois’, but it blends lovely into the skin!
Hahaha drama at fashion week over cheating with makeup 😉
Haha, wonder what people would cheat on with during makeup week?
It’s nothing against L’Oreal really. People just usually stick to what’s best for their skin on special occasions. Fashion week is always a very special occasion to take out your best makeup and clothes because of all the photographing the ladies will be subjected to. If L’Oreal makeup is part of their Holy Grail makeup, then good on them. If not, well, they’ll just stick to what works best for them. For me, I used my Urban Decay Naked eyeshadow palette because I know it works for me. In terms of base makeup, occasions like this is not the time to experiment, not when you’ll be photographed a lot 😛
Thanks for the post! I also look to your blog for updates and honest reviews of new skincare and makeup products!
It’s my pleasure! 🙂
Hi Tine, this sounds like quite a different creature from the US version of Rimmel’s Match Perfection. It didn’t have a pump and it was definitely a creamy texture and not quite the gel-like texture that the Healthy Mix Serum foundie has. In fact I found it dragged a little when I used a brush to apply. The overall effect was okay and even a little drying on my oily skin. I wished I kept it so I could blog about it but I was quite disappointed so I tossed it out. It was USD6! I have a feeling that the formulas in different territories might vary from each other. But but but, your skin looks really good in the photos and perhaps it just didn’t work for me but may work for others 🙂

Ooh really? How strange! The one here has a liquidy texture. Aww gee, 6 bucks?! Why is it so expensive here?? 🙁
How do you think this foundation would compare against Urban Decay Naked since you have tried both? Will look for it in the drugstores in Malaysia but I am afraid they not carry all the 10 shades that the brand has on their website.
I definitely prefer the Rimmel Match Perfection to the Urban Decay Naked Skin. Texture is lighter and overall fares better on my skin. Of course, the price point is also better 🙂
Hi where can u buy rimmel products here in malaysia?
Hi Una,
You can get Rimmel at Watsons, if I’m not mistaken. 🙂
Your nose is so……………….big.

I’m late for this post, but I’m trying to buy rimmel. Do you mind me asking what shade you are for the bourjois, just so I can get an idea. Thank you. Awesome blog.
