I’ve been talking a lot about makeup the past couple of weeks and since I’ll be talking even more about it all of next week (given that it will be LMFF week), I thought I’d do something a bit different today.
Today, I’d love to show you some of my mother’s vintage trinkets. 🙂
When I was back at my parents’ home in Penang early this year, I had the pleasure of rummaging my mother’s collection of vintage jewellery. To her, they’re just random costume jewellery she hadn’t worn in 20 to 30 years but to me, these are precious vintage pieces. They may not be worth much money at all now but given that some of them are over 30 years old, you probably won’t be able to find some of these in charity/thrift stores anymore.
Mum sure was a fashionable lady back in the day (still is to this day). She loved costume jewellery and would always be seen in some interesting trinket one way or the other. Even when she’s not wearing any of these pieces, she’s never seen without her jade bangle around her wrist. Sadly, I’m not a fan of jade but I can see why she loves them. It’s always so refreshingly cold against the skin on such hot tropical days.
It’s interesting how trends move as decades go by. You’ll notice that some of the earrings are actually back in fashion now. Heck, you can even get them at stores like Diva, Colette or Lovisa. According to Mum, they (especially the plastic ones) were very popular in the early 80s. Now that it’s the 2010s, well, looks like they’re back in fashion now! 😛
I hope you’ve enjoyed taking a peek at my mother’s vintage jewellery. She offered to give some to me but I told her to continue keeping it in her drawer of trinkets. This way, I can always return and have a play with them, together with her, whenever I’m back in Malaysia. 🙂
What did you think of Mama Beautyholic’s trinkets? I’m sure you’ve seen some of the designs now selling in stores too. 😛
Beautiful trinket and such funky collection! Haha, my mum is from Penang too and like your mum, she is very fashionable ion her younger days. Not so much anymore these days. Loved the earring collection. The designs appeal to me as you hardly find such costume jewelry design these days with great details. Yeah, I agree. You should let your mum keep it and you can reunite with these lovelies when you return the next time. Old is gold 🙂
Thanks Jennifer. Love how you said it. Old is GOLD! 😀
I saw a pair of earrings in one of your shots which still have the Tangs earring holder. That is so retro! I was born in Singapore and I still remember seeing that logo as a kid! Thanks for this lovely entry!
Hahaha I know right? When I saw it again I was like, hey haven’t seen that Tangs logo in YEARS!! 😛
I love her collection, because if you manage to borrow something from it, at least you can always be sure you won’t run into anyone else with exactly the same thing. My Mom doesn’t collect jewelry but she has an amazing collection of clothes and bags, and I am so hoping she will pass some of them on to me one day. So I must say I love every Mom with treasures and collections like these, for their daughters to admire 🙂
And your Mom’s taste looks very eclectic too, very interesting! 🙂

Thanks J! Mum would be chuffed to hear that 🙂 I agree, I love the things that mums hand down to their daughters. Such precious momentos 🙂
I was amazed by Mama beautyholic’s jewellety collection~~ I agree with you Tine as I can find some of those designs in the market now.
Thanks Michelle. She does have a great collection, doesn’t she? I didn’t even show you the good stuff yet 😉
Lovely treasures you’ve uncovered 🙂 My mom was not into wearing earrings and such so I built my collection of earrings a few years back, am proud to say that I house over 100 pairs of earrings on my earring holder 🙂
Thanks Jess. Love digging around my mum’s things. It’s like a treasure chest full of goodies 😛
Ooooh 100 pairs of earrings! You can pass ’em down to your kids in future! 😀
I love this post, Tine 🙂
Thanks sweets 🙂
I love that jewelry armoire! I’ve been looking for one for ages! Where did Mummy Tine get it from?!

Hahaha I have no idea. She’s had it for ages!
Your mum has really lovely trinkets 🙂 I remember going through my mum’s jewellery pieces when I was younger. Although she does not have much, it was so much fun discovering what the ladies were wearing in the 60s and 70s and also the history that goes with those pieces. LOL.
Oooh I know, right? Bet you tried them on, thought they were so uncool back then but they’re back on trend now. At least, that’s what I did. Back in the day, when I saw those plastic earrings, I was like “euuw mum, bad taste much?” Now it’s “phwoar mum did you predict what the fashion is going to be like 20 years later?!”
Tee hee hee! 😛
I love all the jewellery above. My kind of style, or I think so…still trying to figure out what my style is 🙂
Thanks Shona. You and Mama Beautyholic have style! 😉
