You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough
– Mae West
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, you’d notice that I’ve been posting a few photos with the hashtag #appletisersparkle. So, what was that all about?
Beautyholics Anonymous is proud to be a part of Appletiser’s “Get Your Sparkle On” campaign. It’s a fun one to participate in because they asked me to answer a very interesting question – what are the 5 rules that you live your life by?
If you really think about it, all of us do have rules in which we live our life by. I don’t mean rules like “I have to eat 3 times a day by certain times” or “life is only complete if I make lots of money or marry a rich man and have plenty of babies” (cough). They may not even be called rules. Call them guidelines, if you will. It’s how we want to live our lives. It’s what makes you happy. It’s what make you YOU.
My rules are very simple. Here are 5 of them:
1. There’s no one more important to me than the family I’m born into and the family I choose
My portrait of family silly faces is now complete!
I started the list with the most important rule. The family I’m born into and the family I choose to have in my life (my husband and my closest friends) are the most important people to me. These are the people I would lay down my life for. I may not always show how much I love and appreciate them but they take first place in my life.
2. Life’s too short to wear shit shoes
One day, you will be mine
Growing up, I have the habit of buying lousy-quality shoes because 1) they were cheap and 2) they looked damn good. Unfortunately, even though they did look good, the shoes did not last more than a few wears and most of them would cut into my feet causing blisters. We subject our feet to hard work daily and it’s only right that we treat them well. I don’t mean buying Christian Louboutins or Jimmy Choos (although one can hope ;)), but at least now I buy good-quality shoes that cost a bit more, wear well and do not draw blood.
3. Indulge ever so often
Indulge, my pretties!
Someone once told me, “the first person who should take care of you is YOU” and I never forget it. Treat yourself right. Pamper yourself ever so often, go for a massage or a facial, have a cupcake or two and/or buy something nice for yourself when you can afford it. Indulge when you can, because you deserve it.
4. Stop and smell the roses
Stop and smell the flowers. And photograph them right after
How many times have we been so busy that we overlook the simplest pleasures in life? I love blogs like Humans of New York and Dear Photograph because the images capture the very things we walk past and leave unnoticed. An old couple holding hands, the first bloom of spring, the smile on the face of the homeless bloke when you bought his copy of The Big Issue, a child’s laughter, etc. Sometimes we have to stop and smell the roses because often we forget how sweet they can be.
5. Always look on the bright side of life
Even though the lake is full of dried-up water lilies right now, imagine how beautiful it will be in spring
It’s not just a Monty Python song (although it is a good one, isn’t it? :)). You can live life like Debbie Downer or Happy Harry. You can choose to always see the negative side of things or you can choose to see the silver lining in the clouds. I choose the latter as the way I live because even though life can be very short (see #2), it can also be very long (look at the ones who live to over 100 years old). Better to live it as well as I can by looking at the bright side of life.
So there you go, my 5 rules in which I live my life by. Some may call them cliches but it’s how I’ve lived my life for many years and how I will go on living it. They’re just simple rules with big impact. 🙂

Great campaign Tine! And I love your rule about shit shoes, LOL – add bags to that!
1. Life is too short to worry about the little things. Tune out the noise & focus on what’s most important to you.
2. Success starts with a dream, but nobody ever become successful by dreaming alone. Start with baby steps & be consistently persistent. You might just surprise yourself on where that takes you.
3. Anyone can wear red lipstick – it’s all about finding the right shade and intensity to suit you.
4. Don’t settle for anything less than what you deserve – be it life, love, or work.
5. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

Hi Tine, you’ve made me think a little about my life philosophies and here they are:
1. Smile at a random person every day, you might just cheer them up when they’ve been having a bad day.
2. Relax at least one night a week, being too busy will make you crabby and stressed which is not fun for you or anyone around you.
3. Eat well and exercise hard, make sure you aim for little wins so you will keep motivated.
4. Paint your nails, an awesome manicure is as beautiful thing and will boost your confidence.
5. Eat some chocolate or wear some cocoa scented body lotion, either way, get your little chocolate fix!
Hey I love the 5 rules you have listed especially the shoes one 🙂 Family is important, be it the one you’re born into (I am struggling still to accept that my family is lesser than those that I see, theirs is always perfect while mine is dysfunctional) and the one you’ve chosen. Of course, self love is important too and when we forget to live by ourself, things will crumble because not many people will have the time to devote to you…Thanks for this this wonderful post and reminder that though these are common rules, however they are often most neglected and forgotten ones till someone like you put them into writing.
Your first rule… I’ll make sure to remember that! Family is also really important to me — in particular the family I am born into. I don’t think even the family I’d be choosing would even compare. Mum and sis are the most important without any doubt!
My 5 rules to remember are:
1. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes to know how they’d feel and why they’d do what they did.
2. Always look down, don’t look up. When you look down at others, you will be able to see how much better you have it than others, and from there.. appreciate it of course.
3. Watch your words when you are in a furious state of mind. Words can actually hurt alot to many people. Sadly, they cannot be taken back so watch your words before you speak!
4. Don’t speak for the wrongs of people you love, because that makes them more wrong and makes you wrong. Speak for the truth you believe in and ignore who the recipient is and who they are against. Deal with all situations in an anti-biased way.
5. Hear both sides of the story — why? Because people lie, people mishear what others say and people talks about situations in the way that they feel rather than what actually happened.
That’s that Tine!! <3 Catching up on your posts now! Haven't had time!

If I had to choose only fives of the rules that I live by
Number one would be ONLY ONCE date a bad guy
Don’t marry him of course, that’d be no good
Because he wouldn’t treat you right, as you should.
You’d learn your lesson; he’d be a bit of fun
But totally not what you want for “The One”.
My number two rule would have to be
To laugh often, it’s good for you, and it’s free!
It sets a good example to those you adore
And you’ll notice you’ll be happier more.
My number three rule would be kind to you
You are enough, you do enough, and you have enough too.
My number four rule would be to donate
There’s so many less fortunate, giving is great.
Even if it’s just a small amount
It really is the thought that counts.
And finally, rule number five
Declare your love to thos eyou love whilst you’re alive
For once you’re gone, it’s too late then
So say it with your heart, and say it often!!
I’m not sure I have five rules. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to one rule:
Do whatever you want, so long as you accept the consequences.
All else follows. This is the only rule that stays consistent with me. Long ago, I decided that this world was filled with gods, beings of incredible power and force of will. I am one, and so are you, and so is every person on this planet. We command what we say and do. “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” So to that end, I will act as the god of my life and do whatever I feel like doing, and I will be responsible for my own part. This means accepting that sometimes I can’t forsee potential consequences, and sometimes I have to deal with unintended fallout. x.x It’s a learning experience.
This rule doesn’t always make me very happy. ::laughs:: It’s a harsh rule. It means that I cannot look away from my responsibilities, no matter how enormous they are, or how much it hurts to admit fault. But it is a rule that keeps me honest, and I value that more than comfort.

here’s mine, with 1 or 2 quotes from people.
– Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself. – Harvey Fierstein
– don’t change yourself just to please someone else, make changes because YOU want to.
– earn what you spend, spend what you earn.
– it’s good to forgive and forget, but if you can’t, then don’t force yourself.
– enjoy whatever you are doing, even if it’s just slacking around.

My rule in life is doing RAOK (Random Acts of Kindness) where-ever I go!
My favourite incidents include:
