Sometimes you stumble upon something so good but then hit a wall, and you wonder if it’s worth continuing with it. Sounds oddly contemplative but this is exactly how I feel about a certain foundation I came across quite recently. It’s the Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Makeup.
I haven’t used any foundation that comes in a jar since Maybelline came up with the whipped mousse years ago. I didn’t really like that one and was rather skeptical on whether this would work for me as well.
What do you know? In just 2 days, it shot *this* close to holy grail status.
Description:
Finally, truly decadent makeup offers ultimate performance. The mousse-like texture feels like silk on your skin. And the time release formula balances your skin for a flawless look. All day, flexible wear, without flaking, caking or feeling heavy.
It’s a light-textured, oil-free cream foundation that comes in a big glass jar. It goes on the skin matte and has a short wet-to-dry waiting time.
Coverage is, in my books, fantastic (medium to almost full coverage). It covers all the blemishes well without making the foundation look cakey on the face. It doesn’t sink into fine lines and doesn’t emphasise them at all. The foundation has lasted for over 10 hours on my skin without slipping off or living any drag marks on the skin. In fact, the longer the foundation has been on the skin, the better it looks. I’m still skeptical at the 24-hour claim though because really, who wants to wear foundation for 24 hours?!
The shade I’m using is Medium Beige, which has warm undertones that suit my skin.
Next to my favourite Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation, this came pretty damn close in knocking it off its Holy Grail pedestal.
There’s just one thing that stops it from hitting that #1 position, and that’s the packaging.
Oh how I dislike the packaging. I’ve never understood the point of packaging foundations into jars. It’s unhygienic and attracts dust every time you open and close the jar. This foundation also has a rather odd scent to it. You wouldn’t notice it much if it was in a bottle with a small opening but because it’s in a large jar, the scent becomes more obvious.
The testers for this foundation in stores come in tubes instead of jars, which are so much better. I was tempted to ask the sales staff if I could just buy their testers instead 😛
Other than that, I have to say I’m very happy with Revlon for coming up with this impressive foundation formula. For something that doesn’t make my T-zone look like an oil mine at all, it’s like discovering a pot of gold. It’s happy to sit at the #2 position for now. When I find the time to decant this into a bottle, who knows? It might just knock the Bourjois foundation off its Holy Grail status after all 😉
Revlon ColorStay Whipped Créme Makeup retails at AU$34.95 and comes in 7 shades (Buff, Sand Beige, Nude, Natural Beige, Medium Beige, Warm Gold, True Beige). This is available at MYER, Priceline, Big W, Target, Kmart and selected pharmacies nationwide.
What I like about it: Long-wearing, great coverage on the skin, oil-free, gives the skin a flawless finish without looking overdone.
What I do not like about it: Jar packaging. Enough said.
Have you tried the ColourStay Whipped Créme Makeup foundie before? What did you think about it?
Note: This product was sent for consideration. So glad I was able to try this out and discover how much I love it because honestly, I wouldn’t even give this a second look in stores just because of its packaging.
My number 1 rule, anything that comes in a pot CAN’T be HG worthy!

Seriously, if they can put the foundation into tubes as testers, why couldn’t they just package it in tubes? Grrrr.
Great review!
I really want to try this one. I’ll go to the US in December and this foundation is at the top of my long shopping list (it’s not available in Argentina yet).

Ahh it’ll be so much cheaper in the US. It stinks that Revlon is so expensive in Australia 🙁
I have heard so many good things about this and I really want to try it… but I have so many foundations that need to be used up first… sigh.

Hahaha I know what you mean, Chelsea. I, erm, have at least 7 foundations, all not even 1/4 used >.<
I thought I was the only person like that 🙁 I have 4 tubes of liquid foundation and 2 powder foundation left that i barely used!
I’m confused, what is the formula again? Is it actually a mousse? from the picture, it looks too creamy/runny to be a mousse?
I’m staying away from it purely because of packaging. Napoleon Perdis had a great foundation and formula and coverage was perfect but I never bought it again because of the glass jar.
I’d be annoyed if I dropped it and everything spilt out.
The colour looks really good on you though 🙂
Aryanny: It’s not a mousse. It feels like a mousse when it’s rubbed on the skin because it’s light and goes on matte very quickly but it’s essentially a cream. I’ve been thinking of getting one of those plastic or glass bottles from Daiso and decanting this into the tube. Even though the tubes are see through, that shouldn’t be a problem since the original jar’s transparent as well 😛
Oooh thanks so much for your review. My favourite long wearing foundation is the regular glass bottled version, and I have been uming and ahing as to whether I should try this one. I love Colorstay, but was so undecided about this.
It’s now moved up on my maybe list a notch lol. 🙂
Hahaha well I hope I’ve done my job as an enabler. Ahem ahem *nudge nudge wink wink* 😛
Me too, hate something that comes out from a jar packaging. But everyone seems to be raving about this. I was initially not so keen in trying this due to the packaging (again). However, i saw it in Watson Puchong one day and decided to swatch on my hand and try the texture. And i love it.. 🙂 I haven’t bought it yet, but planning to get my hand on it real soon.
Nani: So good to know I’m not the only one who has a gripe about the jar packaging. I’m very thankful to be sent this to try and fall in love with the foundation because really, I wouldn’t even consider trying it out in store simply because of its packaging. It’s unfortunate because the formula’s very good, but only to be brought down by the darn jar.
the coverage looks really quite good. i can’t imagine the mess if you let this slip off your hand!

Xin: OMG touch wood! 😛
Every time I see this foundation I consider to buy it, but the packaging and that I think they don’t have my shade has stopped me. But I’ll look at it now.

Do try it out in store. Hopefully the formula might change your mind. Or you know, swipe their tester. At least those are not in jars. Hee hee! (okay just kidding, not advocating you to steal testers! :P)
Erm… in Mexico we don’t have testers (I’m not kidding) that is another reason for think a lot about buying, the only way to prove the product is if miraculously there is a SA of the brand in store. The last time I saw one she “tested” on my arm the mousse foundation, a lot of sparkle and a decent shade match.

No testers?! Oh my goodness >.< In a way, it really does make you think hard on whether to purchase something or not since you can't actually check it out in store first. Minimise wallet damage 😛
Well, since there isn’t any tester for drugstore makeup, I prefer buying mid-end or high-end makeup because I can really try the product; they are pricier but I can really now if it is my shade, and is lees probable to end with a product I won’t use.

That makes sense; it’s more of a penny-wise, pound-foolish thing. Better to spend money on things you know will work (or at least, something you actually get to try) then to take a gamble on something you’re not sure of.
loving the coverage with this Revlon product.
gives a nice matte finish and doesn’t go on too thick!!
That’s what I thought too. Love the coverage. The texture’s a bit mousse-y which doesn’t go on thick. It’s a good foundation by Revlon, all right 🙂
this does look good! but i have just recently purchased 2 bourjois foundie that this will take a back seat, and boo to the unhygienic packaging!
plue recently posted..Proud Moment: Ugly Turn Pretty
Hahaha have fun with your Bourjois foundies first. Hopefully, by some sort of miracle, by the time you’d done with those Revlon would have changed the blasted packaging of this foundation 😛
I really want to try this but I’m not happy about the packaging either!

Seems like the jar packaging is a boo boo for a lot of people. Don’t know why the testers come in tubes but the foundation had to come in jars. I’d think it’s cheaper to put them in plastic tubes. It will be a lot easier to dispense and far more hygienic too.
Me too! Jars are just silly, no matter how expensive looking companies make them look. Sometimes I lose the spatula and have no choice but to dig out product with my finger and I feel disgusted with the whole ordeal. LOL. I think Revlon foundations generally smell weird too.

My sentiments exactly! What’s wrong with putting them in bottles or tubes? Can’t be that much more expensive than jars?
Oh I know what you mean about weird smelling Revlon foundations. I have a number of them that smells quite strong. I can’t put my finger exactly on what the smell is. It’s just … foundation-y? 😛
I really like this make-up and am prepared to put up with packaging to get the great coverage and it stays where its meant to.
Good to know! It is a very good foundation and I definitely put up with it too because the coverage really is fantastic.
Would you say this is a yellow undertone? Please reply thanks!
Yep, this foundation has warm yellow undertones 🙂
Hi!!
I just want to know, where did you read or saw that this fundation is oil-free?
I’ve been looking for this information at website of revlon and I never found the answer :/
on the label it’s just written that it’s paraben and talc free, please tell me!
Greetings!!

Hi Janis, it’s from experience that this foundation is oil-free (I don’t think it’s actually mentioned anywhere, although I haven’t properly checked if it actually says it’s oil-free). I have a very oily T-zone, especially on my nose, yet this foundation works a treat in keeping my skin matte but not too matte.
