How to Apply Mascara For Maximum Oomph

Innoxa Lash Define Mascara, Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

This may not be new to makeup aficionados, but it’s some a trick I stumbled upon last month when I was in Sydney for the Beauty Bloggers Utopia. Norlin and I shared a hotel room, and given the lack of mirrors and good lighting, I did all of my makeup by the window using my handheld mirror. By the way, it’s a good item to bring with you when travelling, especially a medium-sized foldable mirror. You never know if your hotel room has crappy mirrors and lighting. Daiso sells them very cheaply.

Anyway, back to the trick. I was sitting by the window, holding my mirror while I was applying my mascara. When I was done, I looked at the mirror and gasped. Man, my eyelashes were long! I’ve never experienced that, not with the same mascara I was using before.

Here’s the trick:

Curl eyelashes

1. Curl your eyelashes with your favourite eyelash curler.

2. Instead of looking straight at the mirror, hold a hand mirror below your face and look down.

Look down at mirror and apply mascara

3. When you’re looking down at the mirror, slightly lift your eyebrows.

4. Hold the mascara wand as close to the roots of the lashes as possible and apply in a zig-zag motion upwards.

I find that by looking down at the mirror, it allows you to hit as close to the roots as possible, lifting the lashes and coating as much surface area with mascara as possible. Looking straight in front of the mirror only allows you to go as much as where the lashes are curled.

Again, this isn’t probably a new trick for most ladies, but boy was I excited when I found out how I could make my lashes go further. Ahh … the little things that make us happy, eh? 😛

A little trick of mine is slightly closing you eyes (half way). Then wiggle your mascara wand between your bottom and top lashes, then extend the brush upwards touching your upper lashes as you go. This technique ensures minimum smudging on your eyelids and longer lashes. Kinda the same at the technique you showed Tine but minus having to look down into a mirror.

Thanks for the tip, Phoebe! I’m all for minimum smudging. My hands shake a little every time I apply mascara so I do tend to smudge my eyelids a little at times 😛

  9. Charlotte

Nice tip! Will give this a try tmr! Btw, I love your mirror! Is it from Anna Sui? Can I know where did you get it? 😀

    1. Tine

Thanks Charlotte. I got the mirror from Bangkok. Very Anna Sui, right? It was only about 3 bucks I think 😛

  12. Angel

These are great tips …except I want to warn you that raising that brow can come back to bite u ! unless you are a botox babe it’s probably not a good ideas to do often 😉

    1. Tine

Hahahahaha good one, Angel! I can’t help it though; I’m a brow raiser! Especially like to raise just one eyebrow. My husband gets really annoyed when I raise an eyebrow at him because he can’t do it. I was originally contemplating Botox to fix a deep line right between my brows, but decided against it because that would mean I’ll lose the ability to raise an eyebrow. Don’t know if I’m ready to give that up yet (and admit defeat to him!) 😉

  13. Firn

You should try this with a magnifying mirror. The results are even more impressive!

To get around the brow-raising issue, I have my mirror almost below my chin and I look down so that I don’t smudge mascara on my lids.

    1. Tine

Oooh good idea Firn! I’m going to try this out with a magnifying mirror next. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂
