I’ve never really been a fan of Lunasol makeup, especially the eyeshadows. Sure they’re very pretty to look at it, but they’re usually too sheer and shimmery for my liking. Val suggested that I check out their foundations, and that was when I picked up the Water Gel Foundation on my trip to Malaysia. Little did I know she actually meant the cream foundation. Oh well, a gel foundie sounded good enough for my combination skin π
The packaging’s a simple one. Brown plastic and opaque with a shiny cap. The mouth of the tube is a thin one, which is what I like. I really do not like foundations that have a big opening (I’m looking at you, Clinique!). They create more opportunities for spills. Either make it with a small opening, or attach a pump that allows easy and mess-free dispensing. Easy peasy.
The name Water Gel Foundation would probably make you think of Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation. The name is where the similarity ends. Bourjois’ Serum Gel Foundations are slightly runny with cool tones whereas Lunasol’s is quite creamy with warm tones.
Like many Asian foundations, this one is is yellow-tone-based. My skin has warm, yellow undertones, so it suits me, but it might not suit those with cool undertones. It spreads smoothly on the skin and covers my open pores and imperfections well. This foundation offers almost full coverage, so you have to be careful with the amount used lest it turns out cakey on the skin, especially around the nose.
Longevity-wise, this foundie aced it out of the park. I’ve had this one for about 10 hours and nothing has slipped off. It’s oil-free, but given that I do have an exceptionally oily nose, I did get a bit of shine on my T-zone after an hour.
I have the shade in OC02. Here’s a comparison in shades with other foundations and a BB cream.
Lunasol Water Gel Foundation in OC02, Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in B30 (Beige-Sable), Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation in 52 Vanilla, Revlon Age Defying DNA Advantage Cream Makeup in 25 Medium Beige and Skinfood Mushroom Multi Care BB cream in #1
Do I like it? Yes I do. It’s great for the evenings, when I need extra coverage and I particularly like using it when it’s cold outside. It’s not heavy on the skin either. I don’t have much experience with Asian foundations so this Lunasol foundation is a good foray for me into more Asian foundies.
I’m afraid I don’t really remember how much I got the Lunasol Water Gel Foundation for. It was purchased during my holiday in Malaysia; perhaps it’s somewhere along the RM150 (approximately AU$50) mark? If you do know how much it actually costs, please let me know and I’ll update this post π
Have you tried foundations from Lunasol before? What are your thoughts about them?
It looks like a tinted moisturizer on swatch but once applied all over face, it gives a fair amount of Coverage Tine! π I haven’t tried any of Lunasol foundations! Just the eyeshadow palette π
Nikki: The eyeshadow palettes are always very beautiful but I find them really sheer and shimmery. I’m more of a matte and metallics girl π
It looks very nice, I will be sure to keep an eye out for this if I ever head over that way. There’s so many treasures and different makeup ranges it’s almost tempting to take a trip to Asia for that alone π
Good excuse to visit family, hehe.

Kaye: Oh I know, right? So many goodies in Asia. Definitely cheaper than getting a limited amount of them in Australia >.<
Guess what! I have one of these… and haven’t used it! >.< I do like Japanese base makeup. I swear they do the best bases ever. But the "best" comes with a corresponding pricetag. Still, a good base is the best foundation of all π

this is the free gift i was talking about Paris! got from the isetan lunasol set! excited that someone actually reviewed and liking this! thank you Tine for reviewing it!
this is the best foundation i had so far! lightweight and awesome coverage!!
Gin: My pleasure Gin. It’s a gorgeous foundie π
Paris B: Oh yeah this one ain’t cheap. But I’m all for good quality bases and cheapie everything else so, erm, justified? π
It looks so similar to the Bourjois one! And wow, I didn’t know there are water-gel foundations in this world. Looks like a good one to try.

Jyoan: It’s creamier than the Bourjois one actually. But they spread equally well on the skin and holds on even better π
I have used both the Lunasol Water Modelling Liquid Foundation and this one, Lunasol Water Gel Foundation. I personally prefer the Water Liquid Foundation over this one which I find it drying for my combination skin. Nevertheless, this gel foundation has excellent coverage, so far the best for a gel foundation.
Espenine: Oooh you’ve tempted me with with liquid foundie now. I’ll check it out when I’m back in Malaysia. Thanks for the rec π
Wow wow wow, stopped and smiled when I read ‘spreads smoothly on the skin and covers my open pores and imperfections well. This foundation offers almost full coverage’. YES! YES! These words are music to my ears and can’t-think-of-something to my face.

Sounds like a great one. I only have the cream and it’s fab. Maybe I should check out the gel next!!
Ponikuta: Haha I thought you actually meant this one! I’ll check out the cream one when I can π
I’ll give anything called Age Defying a go!
Hahaha me too! π
