Growing up, I was a big fan of Enid Blyton books. My favourite ones were the boarding school stories like Malory Towers and St Clare’s. Oh how I enjoyed them, dreaming about the adventures I’d have with them at boarding school (and *ahem* smacking someone with a paddle brush :P). In fact, I remembered asking my mum to send me to one just so I could have an “Enid Blyton Malory Towers-style” experience. That was before I found out what boarding schools were like in Malaysia, and suddenly, thoughts dreams were dashed 😛
In her books, most students carried satchels. I didn’t know what satchels looked like until about 10 years ago. I can’t really recall what students in the UK carried their books in when I was in university, but when I was living in Japan, most Japanese students carried scarlet leather satchels, that could also be converted into backpacks. I knew then that I wanted one too, and after seeing LeGeeque‘s and Paris B‘s satchels from the Cambridge Satchel Company, it was high time I got myself one too.
Unfortunately, I had a lot of issues with the Cambridge Satchel Company and 2 months after I placed my order, I had to cancel it. I’ll tell you about my experience shopping with them one day, but suffice to say, appalling customer service played a big role, and I could not shop with them anymore. A few months later, I managed to finally get my leather satchel from Zatchels, and truth be told, it’s one of the prettiest bags I have.
I bought the 13″ bag, which fits the iPad perfectly. Good for days when I want to bring my iPad out in a bag that looks equally good 😉
The leather satchel is very stiff brand new, so it’s quite difficult to put things in at first. In order to stretch the leather, I stuffed a few copies of Vogue into the bag :P. A few days later, my wallet, makeup bag, minties, shopping bag, mobilephone and small purse could fit in the bag without any trouble.
It’s quite a hassle buckling the flap everytime I take something in and out of the bag, so I do not lock it down fully when I use the bag. My mum would exclaim in horror if I did this in Malaysia, which is why I will only use this bag in Australia 😛
The leather will soften in time and use. I hope the colour doesn’t fade though, and if it does, I hope it fades to a lovely dark green. I wouldn’t be able to carry this to school back in the day though (we had heaps of textbooks and exercise books back then. This bag would only a maximum of two textbooks), so I’m fully enjoying it now.
It even comes with a certificate of authenticity!
Next up, an 11″ satchel or maybe a barrel bag? 😉
I love my satchel too. Glad you and I are enjoying our pretty stash 🙂 the 11″one fits the ipad 2 fine. Maybe you need the ipad 3 heeheee
LeGeeque: I’m tempted to get an 11″ one, which I can also use as a clutch. So chic man 😛
I love your satchel. That green? To DIE for! Maybe if either of you lot place an order I should share shipping 😛 I’d just have to collect it later LOL! As for the strap thing? I use mine here half buckled too because as you pointed out, in a rush, it can be tough to go through all the unbuckling. Life can be quite scary here but in the main, if one is vigilant, its all good 😉

Paris B: Gorgeous, right? I’m so glad I chose this colour. I wanted a brown or red originally. Don’t know what made me change my mind 😛 Now I want an 11″ one, so I can also use as a clutch 😉
I love my dose of St Clare and Malory Towers. I’d secretly wish my parents would be able to send me to a boarding school so I can have fun like the girls in Enid’s book.
I could never carry a satchel, i find it difficult to carry on my shoulder n more often than not, i can’t fit in my stuff in it. Tote bag it is for me ahaha.
loving the bright green though it isn’t a colour i would carry for bags, tend to stick to neutral colours 😛

Plue: Ooooh me too! Unfortunately the boarding schools in Malaysia, well, it leaves much to be desired 😛
I think before last year, the brightest bags I’ve had were red. Now I have a fluoro orange and a green. Hee hee 😛
I’ve wanted one of those for ages and a green one like yours! OMG I’m so getting one this year. I never ever get excited about handbags but that is gorgeous! 😀

It looks so bright and cheerful! Love it! I adore Enid Blyton to bits and must confess I still read her books.

Lyn: I love Enid Blyton. Her books were my entire childhood 🙂
Love Enid Blyton too!
But I also can’t carry a satchel. It will slip off my shoulders. Plus the general length is at my hip bone, which is really protruding… not good for a bag. Bag is best between my waist and elbow. =)
I have too many things for satchel! I keep wondering how I am ever going to fit my dailies in. LOL.
That said, yes, saw Paris B’s too! The cutting and linings look really good.

Hi Tine,
This was the page I was looking for… There is a site offering Zatchels for sale and it starts in 1 and half hour. I don’t know what size to get si I wanted to check what was yours…hahaha…:-p. Pray and hope I get to score one later!
Hahaha go for it! This is a very good size, the 13″. The rest are either too small or too big. The leather is very stiff though but after using it for a while, it will soften. 🙂
Hahaha, managed to grab one 13″ in cornflower blue and a pastel pink barrel for 892 yuan (about RM450) and am eligible for the first 150 name card holder as well!
