Oh I’ve been there. We’ve all been there. The frustration of staring at the computer monitor and no words come out. My worst hit was mid last year, when I was so out of blogging mojo that I blogged a maximum of 3 times a month.
It happens to the best of us. Blogger’s block is something a lot of us face from time to time. The most important thing is not to let it get to you so much that you give up and stop blogging altogether. To be honest, I very almost did.
Here are some simple steps I use to get me out of the funk. Perhaps it’s something you use too?
Ask your readers what they’d like from you
My readers are my main source of inspiration. For example, when I’ve run out of topics to write for my Bloggie Wednesdays series, I asked my readers what they wanted to know. In less than 48 hours, I’ve had enough topics and suggestions to last me 2 months!
If there isn’t a specific topic that your mind is blank to write about, how about posting something personal? I don’t mean you have to rant about your ex, your mother-in-law, etc, but perhaps somewhere interesting you’ve been over the weekend. Or maybe share some random Instagram-ish pictures you took during the week. It breaks away from the routine. I’ve mentioned this before, but I find writing product review after product review, a few similar posts in a row, dull and uninspiring. Maybe add a “voyeuristic” post like your makeup collection, what’s in your makeup bag, etc. People (by that I mean me) enjoy posts like that π
Read magazines and books
There’s something about the glossy pages of mags that attract me to them. Like a magpie to shiny objects, I’m drawn to magazines. True, beauty blogs often release trend information and product releases much quicker than print media, but there’s just something about the glossy pages that make me go back for more. I swear it’s something they infuse into the paper π
As for books, examples like Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual and Zoe Foster’s Amazing Face may be able to give you some tips and tricks to try out. And when you do, blog about it! Study the ingredients in your skincare products. Learn what they actually do, then blog about it. These are just a few examples for you to not just increase your makeup skills, but also to learn more about what you’re actually putting on your skin.
If you have an iPad, I recommend the free Net-a-Porter app. Yes, it’ll bring you heaps of temptations (my wishlist grows with every new issue), but it will also show you what the latest trends are. It’s visually appealing and the videos are interesting.
Surround yourself with other beauty bloggers
I’m incredibly blessed to have a group of friends who are beauty bloggers (I don’t just call them my blogging buddies anymore; they’re friends :)), some in Asia and the rest here in Australia. I could be exhausted with blogger’s block, but an afternoon with them will, more often than not, spring myself back to my blogging mojo. I enjoy talking makeup and skincare with LeGeeque on an almost daily basis; she’s given me more things to write about that I can count on my hands.
Blogging is a community thing. You can’t expect to excel on your own. If I didn’t have the support from my fellow beauty bloggers, I don’t think I would have lasted past a couple of years of beauty blogging.
Step away from the blog
Sometimes it’s good to just step away from the blog. We’re only human, and as passionate as we are about our blogs and readers, sometimes we need take a short break and recharge our blogging batteries. No apologies to your readers needed, but explain that you’re drained and need to take a brief hiatus. I believe your readers will understand.
What do you do when you have blogger’s block? What? You’ve never had blogger’s block?! Surely that’s not true π
I so agree, great tips Tine.
I also keep notes on my phone as I always come up with ideas when I am out or with friends. I email these to myself so I always have a long list of blogging topics to choose from.

Christina: That’s a great idea. I do exactly that too! Write down in Notes, and them email them to myself π
This is a perfectly timed post for me because I’m having a bit of bloggers block at the moment. I think I just need to take a break and step back for a little while because I’ve been working on blog posts flat out lately. I tend to get my ideas from television, friends, other bloggers. I look at what the trends are all around me and see how I can work that into my blog. I also just try to blog about things that I enjoy rather than feeling like I have to blog just for the sake of it.

Megan: It’s good that you blog about the things you enjoy. That’s the point of blogging. Blogging for the sake of filling in the space just takes the joy out of it altogether.
In terms of TV, I’ve written a couple of posts quite some time ago while watching junk like Today Tonight π
Awww… do you know we talk about every darn thing under the sun? Hair, makeup products, drinks, geek toys, goss, errr, other stuff which should not be mentioned here π

Great tips, Tine! I get Bloggers Block (I call it “burnout”) quite often and the best thing for me is to just take a week off – it’s usually then when I come up with tons of ideas and realize how much I miss the blog! (Oh and it’s also important that during that week “off” to schedule some posts beforehand for readers!)
xx

Renee: Good one, Renee! That’s why I think it’s a good idea to have drafts and posts ready when you’re hit with inspiration, and not post them all at once. You need those to tide you over the dry spells π
I encounter mini blogger-burnouts every month. I just take it as a part of my natural mood cycle. But I’ve also gone through major blocks where I didn’t want anything to do with blogging. I just take some time off when it happens. And I also have a book in which I jot down all my blogging ideas. So when I can’t think of what to write about, I’ll just flip through it.

Poohkie: That’s a good idea, to keep a blogging notebook. I have one too (or three :P). Good when you’re on the go.
LOL we have plenty to talk about when I get together with the other girls….but most of it not safe for posting on the blog! *eeps*

I love the tips! I loooove to blog but sometimes I will sit there just staring at the screen – even though I have an amazing article to write about!
My tip is to write about what truly inspires and excites you. Blogging is not about essays or composing university assessments – enjoy what you do and people around you will do the same.

Tammerly: You are so right. To be honest, sometimes I do feel like I’m churning out essays, and blogging does something feel like an assignment I have to complete. That’s when I know I’m burned out and have to step away and do something else.
woo! Great post!
I’ve been having this recently! bloggers block sucks!
So tomorrow I’m gonna go the shops and pick up a few mags to see if they trigger some movement!
thanks for the tips hunny!

Great article! I agree that review after review can get boring and our blogs benefit from a little injection of us!
Karyn recently posted..Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream
Karyn: Exactly! If writing review after review is boring, imagine having to read review after review. It’s good to mix it up with a little bit about the blogger from time to time π
Thank you Tine for this wonderful post! So very true about magazines, there is definitely something done to the paper :)) I am myself a magazine addict and it’s a great source of inspiration as well as the books. I also like to check out Lookbook.nu and read WWD to ignite the blogging sparkle.
Lina: Good idea. Lookbook.nu and WWD are great sources for fashion trends and ideas π
It’s tough coming up with new articles sometimes; even if I have a great one in my head, sometimes I find that I’m writing an essay ten pages long. Information overload for most people, but when it’s something I enjoy, I absorb it like a sponge! And then it ends up in the Drafts folder… where I inevitably forget about it.
I think maybe it’ll help me to start ‘scheduling’ recurring blogworthy events; in my case, seasons changing, new months, holidays, “old” vs. “new” calendar correspondences, etc. Maybe then I won’t go blank when I go to write? Maybe I’ll surround myself with new books and mags too- and then I can write about those!

Thurisaz Sala’il: Man, I so know what you mean. The idea stews in my head, but the words just don’t form. Or when it does, they’re too much. Sigh.
Yeah those are very good ideas. An editorial calendar is great for planning and scheduling posts, and you can move topics around the place to suit your needs or when a new season comes π
I’m having a drought, not just blogger’s block! π
I’ll be lucky if I can come up with more than 1 post a month. Just don’t have the inspiration to do review post after review post like you said. So, I’m going to mix things up starting from this month onwards!
rinnah recently posted..My Women Stuff Readers Choice Awards 2011
Rinnah: Good idea to mix things up. Boring lah write reviews only π
I’m relatively new to the scene, so haven’t experienced any ‘blockage’. Haha. But there were times when I had things to write about but just wasn’t in the mood. How do you deal with ‘not being in the mood’?
I love magazine-reading too! I look forward to going to my hairdresser’s for a long treatment just so that I can sit there and rot and read all the glossy pages. =D

Bun Bun: Oh I have plenty of “not in the mood” moments. That’s when I have to step away from the computer, or at least, the blog. Just so I don’t waste the blogging time, I’d use those moments to snap pictures of products, etc.
Hahahaha I do that too! My hairstylist has a lot of Asian magazines. Can’t read them, but at least the pictures are pretty π
Time prevents a lot of use from blogging as much as we want to and then when we get the time there is nothing worse than brain fog. The last few months have been crazy for me and I haven’t had time to blog let alone read other blogs but things come in waves so I don’t let it bother me like when I first started. It’s a hobby and it’s meant to be fun, not inducing lots of stress! π
Annabella Freeman recently posted..A tale of two scrubby gloves
Annabella: I hear you Annabella. It IS meant to be fun. When I start stressing about why I’m not blogging, why I’m stuck in the funk, I know it’s time for me to step away from it for a while. When it induces stress, then it’s a JOB π
