I’ve been blogging for over 6 years now, and although that may not be much compared to those who have been blogging since the 90s (what up Geocities!), it’s been a project of mine which has grown in significant proportions. Over the years, I’ve encountered my fair share of highs and lows in blogging.
Today, I’d like to share with you the mistakes I made in blogging all these years. There are a lot more, but I’ll just regale you with four for now 😛
1. Overwhelming myself with blogs on blogging and SEO
I remembered when I started reading blogs about blogging. 7 ways to make your blog a better one. 15 things you must do in order to keep your blog in top SEO shape (Search Engine Optimisation). 21 tips and tricks to put your blog on Google’s first page. 35 WordPress plugins you’ll ever need. All these topics came from blogs on blogging. I had only started blogging then, and I already wanted to be the next Problogger and Liz Strauss. So I started following over 50 blogs on a daily basis, just on topics on blogging alone.
About 6 months in, I was thoroughly exhausted. Don’t get me wrong, these are great blogs. But it was information overload. It had nothing to do with what I enjoy doing, which was writing about women and beauty. I just couldn’t keep up. In the end, my brains were so saturated with what I MUST and MUSN’T do that I actually lost interest in blogging altogether. If you noticed this time last year, I was barely blogging at all (I hit rock bottom when I only blogged less than 3 times a month).
I unsubscribed to the blogs, only keeping the ones that are relevant to me. I still get a few updates daily, but just enough for me to learn and move on.
2. Not replying comments
This was a HUGE mistake I made for almost two years. I stopped replying comments left on my blog posts. There was absolutely no excuse to my behaviour, only pure laziness on my part. I did not lose any readers then (thank God!) but I didn’t gain any readers either. It was rude of me to not reply comments, especially when the reader has taken time out of her busy schedule to write a reply. I did personally email any urgent questions though, but it wasn’t enough.
I’m glad I finally learned my lesson in getting off my lazy arse to reply comments. If you have the time to comment, I bloody well should have the time to reply.
3. Not commenting enough
Unfortunately, this is a mistake I’m still making. I’m just not commenting on other blogs enough. I’m reading and subscribing to so many blogs these days that most of the time I find myself scanning through the piece and then move on to the next.
I do enjoy commenting on blogs because it’s generating a conversation with the blogger, showing the blogger support on what she wrote. After all, that’s what beauty blogging is, isn’t it? It’s a community.
So, note to self: BUCK UP AND COMMENT.
4. Taking it all too seriously
This is not to mean I don’t take my blog seriously, because I do. I put in a lot of hard work into my blog, and I take pride in it.
What I mean is not to let the blog take over your life. It did for a while. I’d rather be blogging in the weekends than go out with Tim or my friends. I’d rather be blogging than Skyping with my parents who are in Malaysia. I threw a big stink when the pictures Tim helped me take for the blog weren’t good enough. A few months ago, I missed my period and I thought I was pregnant. Instead of being excited or freak the hell out, I was worried how it would affect my going to the ABBW! 😛 (I would still go, of course, but you know what I mean )
Moral of the story: don’t let your blog run your life.
What about you? Have you made any blogging mistakes before? No mistakes are too big, small or stupid. Without them, we’d never learn.
I am really enjoying your Bloggie Wednesday posts. Very helpful.
I just went and replied to all my comments! I need to improve also on both commenting on other blogs and replying.
Great post.
Tara recently posted..My Latest Loves!
Tara: Thanks T. I’m glad you enjoy them 🙂
I need to improve on my commenting on other blogs too. I noticed that I tend to reply them on Twitter (when someone updates their blog, and mentions the new post on Twitter) instead of writing below the post. Need to break that habit quick.
Great post Tine! One of my blogging mistakes was apparently providing links to products available on discount retailers, which received scathing comments from a fellow blogger. To be honest if I didn’t have relationships with PR, I would probably have continued doing it, as being a consumer I am interested in bargain shopping, even if it comes with the risks of sourcing it from a discount retailer. It’s rather ironic to me that offline – my friends are more than happy to get the links, whereas online – I feel inclined not to link at all to keep the peace.
akisa recently posted..I’m off to the Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) at IMATS!
what? But why would a fellow blogger be nasty about that? Isn’t it good to provide bargains??
And does anyone the “etiquette” of linking to the beauty companies?? Sometimes I feel like I should link and sometimes I don’t… Is there an unwritten rule?
Ling recently posted..The Best Beauty Blog Business Cards
I don’t think there’s any written rules, but I think there is an “unwritten etiquette” that from my experience when not followed, results in public criticism.
Akisa & Ling: Personally, for products that are received for consideration, it would be pertinent to link to retail prices and their official stockists. For products I purchased, it would be my discretion to include bargain price links. More often than not, a lot of brands do not recognize nor approve of bargain sites like Strawberrynet as product distributors. That’s what I think anyway 🙂
Regarding commenting, I only comment if i have time or appreciate the time someone took to write the blog post. Half the time I am reading blog posts on my tiny iPhone and having to sign-in to comment on 3G network is too much hassle..
akisa recently posted..I’m off to the Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW) at IMATS!
Akisa: I noticed a lot of bloggers replying comments on their phones or on the go too. Understandable that it wouldn’t be easy to reply every single comment 🙂
Yaaaay Bloggie Wednesdays! I too did the SEO thing for a little while. But it can really take the joy out of blogging, and is linked to your #4: taking it all too seriously. Thanks for another great post x
Miss Melbourne: Thanks, and I’m chuffed you enjoy my Bloggie Wednesday posts. The whole SEO thing can get pretty overwhelming, especially reading about it! 😛
BTW I actually read this post earlier on in my iphone but I came back later to comment as stupid iphone sucks at making commenting easy…maybe they should create an app for that…
Anywayyyyy, I just wanted to say that I also made the same fatal mistake of not replying comments in my personal blogging heydays… I just didn’t know!! And I totally lost readers…loads of them…so I’m not making the same mistake nowadays on my blog – and in fact, if a commenter leaves a link with their blog, I go and comment on their blog too – just to return the comment love…
And ooh, first time hearing about your “false prego” – and hehe, about thinking about ABBW! I think if it happened to me, I’d feel the same way 😛
Anyway, this comment is so rambly and I need to go and pack my shizz…see you in a few days lovely xxx
Ling recently posted..The Best Beauty Blog Business Cards
Oooh, and one more thing which you advised me – and that is NOT to go stat crazy!! I think I logged onto Google Analytics too often for 5 consecutive days and got semi-depressed about the lack of visitors – but then it’s not about the traffic and I should just let my blog grow organically.
And okay…gotta stop talking now 😛
Ling recently posted..The Best Beauty Blog Business Cards
Ling: I used to be obsessed about my blog stats. Before I used Google Analytics (back in the day, it wasn’t that popular. I don’t know why), I used Statcounter. As I didn’t use WP yet (which meant I don’t have it on the dashboard of Blogger), I would log on to Statcounter daily and record the figures. It was crazy. I was crazy 😛
Haha, I think I only told Val about the false prego thing. Her words “YOU BETTER NOT BE EFFING PREGNANT FOR ABBW!” Hee hee 😛
I really enjoy your Bloggie Wednesdays and they are so informative and related to what I am passionate about 🙂 I honestly wish there is a better commenting system available on blogger because there are no email / feedback alert options to those who have left comments. I can only respond to them in the comments space and hope the reader returns to read it. I don’t think it happens often though.
lyn recently posted..Etude House Goodbye Pore Ever Pore Primer Essence
Lyn: To be honest, I didn’t even know there was a plugin for alerting readers about my replying their comments on Wordpress till about a few months ago. I too was hoping that my readers would return to check if I’ve replied them. These days, with people being so busy and all, the chances of that happening is slim to none 🙁
I haven’t used Blogger in a while, but is there an option where people can subscribe to comments? If not, well, it’s high time you move on to Wordpress, lady! 😉
Mistake 1: Caring too much what people thought of me (on my blog)
Mistake 2: Revealing the true author behind my blog – I hid behind it for many years because it was cathartic. One argument led to another and I shut it down.
Mistake 3: Shutting down my blog.
LeGeeque: Well, now that you’ve started blogging again, mistakes learned! Welcome back love 😀
Great post! I totally agree about getting overwhelmed following blogs about blogging. It does my head in sometimes reading about all the things I should and shouldn’t be doing, when in reality I blog because it makes me happy and no amount of traffic or good SEO should change my passion.
Elise @ The Nail File recently posted..Swatched: Nubar Paradise
Elise: Well said, Elise! No amount of SEO-ing should ever affect your passion for writing 🙂
Hehe, geocities… I made sure to save all my files when they announced that they were going to dissapear into oblivion. As for commenting, if I have something relevant to say, I’ll leave a comment. But I’m a bit if a snob myself. Not because I’m an actual snob, but because I do everything on my phone and it takes longer to do it all, plus I’m super lazy 🙁
Rin recently posted..A2LB Haul & Review
Rin: Yeah a lot of bloggers reply comments on their phones or on the go, so it’s not easy replying every comment 🙂
I saved my Geocities files too! I think they’re in a CD or floppy disk somewhere in my parents’ home in Malaysia. Now to find a computer that still accepts floppy disks 😛
I love Bloggie Wednesdays Tine! Last week I was trying to remember what day it was and the first thought that popped into my head was ‘it’s Bloggie Wednesday!’ haha.
Blogging can get addictive but it’s so hard to balance everything if you want to post somewhat-frequently. I must also remember that real life comes before my interwebz life 🙂
Molly recently posted..Bloom Crackle Polish
Molly: Hahaha really? Well, then tomorrow’s a Bloggie Wednesday then! Which reminds me, I have to start drafting the post now 😛
I am so in love with your Bloggie Wednesdays Tine! Again thank you for sharing your knowledge, and I just had to chuckle about the preggo/ABBW thing 😀
And I am really glad to read last point, cos now I don’t have to feel bad about my sporadic blogging 🙂
Tina recently posted..FOTD – Pink & Black
Tina: Thanks love. The false preggo thing is true. I mentioned it to Val after Zoe Foster’s latest book signing, and she was like “YOU BETTER NOT BE EFFING PREGNANT FOR ABBW!” I believe she also meant for MBBE 😛
Sporadic blogging is fine. If your content is good (believe me, yours is), you will still get readers and good traffic even if you blog once or twice a week.
Love this post Tine!
I think my biggest mistake has definitely been letting my blog take over my life sometimes, I go through stages where I’m obsessed with it and blog constantly to the point that I’m up late every night and not sleeping enough. I try to comment on other blogs as much as possible but only if I have something of value to say, I don’t really want to just say “That’s pretty” I’d like to put some thought into my comments and I think bloggers do appreciate that much more.
Megan recently posted..ABBW Packing Tips
Megan: Wholly agree with you on the commenting thing. I would rather comment something substantial than write “Hey good post!”, which may be misconstrued as spam. You know what they say, if you have nothing good to say, then don’t say it. I believe that applies to commenting too, even if it’s a good one. You know what I mean?
Oh I know what you mean about losing sleep over blogging. I’ve been known to write till past 1am just to get a post out. Have learned to do better now. I draw the line at midnight 😛
This is great! Another one of my mistakes is that I pay too much attention to my stats. I’ve learned to just let it go and if you are passionate in what you are doing, the rest will come.
Fabuless Beauty recently posted..Costco Deal: Olay Pore Minimizing Cleanser and Scrub (Two Pack for $7)
Fabuless Beauty: Exactly. If you build it (and build it well), they will come. I’m channeling Field of Dreams here 😛
I love these Wednesday posts of yours since I learn so much. I never realized before that I should be commenting on comments but the last few months I’ve been so much better about it. I just assumed no one checked back. Now I know better. Thanks for all your tips.
MarciaF (beauty info zone) recently posted..Thumbs up for Nuance Salma Hayek Neutral Eye Quad

Another great post Tine! Thanks to you for the reply me plugin suggestion…..now I reply to every comment. And yes I need to work on the #4 mistake too 🙂
Harshleen recently posted..Inis Arose from Fragrances of Ireland

Hey…I really enjoy your blogging posts and last time when you talked about media kit, I wanted to comment but sheer laziness just like you 🙂 I have yet to prepare a media kit and will get down to it!!! thanks a lot and please feel free to visit my blog and drop in your comments 🙂
Swati recently posted..Yardley of London Contest {Giveaway}
Swati: Will do, Swati 🙂 Have fun preparing your media kit. It’s like creating your CV, but a fun one 😛
Oh Tine! Do you know how much I appreciate your Bloggie Wednesdays??? Thanks for these, I am learning a lot! I’ve been blogging for 4 years+ and I just feel too comfortable about it that I don’t consider the things you mentioned!
Thanks for this, super appreciate your post!!!
Nikki: Thanks love. I really appreciate it, especially coming from you 🙂
I am not a blogger at all but I love this post! You are very humble to write about your mistakes and I’m sure a lot of bloggers will learn from this post… You just don’t know how I appreciate every reply I get from you everytime I comment on your blog. 🙂 Keep it up Tine and more power to your blog! 🙂
Issa: Thanks Issa. I’m using the reply-comments-email plugin to hold myself accountable to the blog and my readers. If you have the time to comment, I have the time to reply, and you should be able to see my reply easily without having to check back 🙂
I love your posts on blogging. I find I’m often reading blogs on my phone too and it’s so hard to comment them.
I’m going to make more of an effort to respond to comments too
Christina @ Hair Romance recently posted..NYFW Runway to Reality – alice + olivia – How to get the look
Christina: My pleasure, Christina 🙂 I noticed a lot of bloggers replying comments on their blogs with their phones too (me included). Quite a feat, doing it on a tiny screen 😛
Great post! I need to comment more too but I read so many blogs these days it’s getting harder and harder to keep up. Still, I’ll try and be better as I really like interacting with other bloggers.
gio recently posted..How Many Nail Polish Coats Do You Apply?
Gio: Tell me about it. I get at least 100 new updates on a daily basis. It would take me ages to comment on each one. Sigh 🙁
I appreciate that you are so damned frank about your mistakes, especially #4. However, I also see something else other than mistakes. I think it’s because of your seriousness that your blog is such a successful one 🙂
Amanda recently posted..Review: Sukin Foaming Facial Cleanser
Amanda: Aww thanks Amanda. Really appreciate that 😀
I must also be mindful not to let blogging take over my life.
6 years is a long time! WOW! But keep it up! I love reading your posts!
Are you going to reply? Haha!

Bun Bun: I just did. HAH! 😀
Nah, six years of blogging ain’t that long. There are many who’s been blogging for well over ten years! Now that’s admirable 😉
I used to read about 50 blogs on blogging. I still read quite a few (but not 50 anymore!) I am also bad at responding to all comments on my blog, and I don’t have threaded comments, which makes it more difficult to read comment replies. My biggest problem is procrastinating and not spending enough time working on posts.
Jeni recently posted..Robinul For Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
Jeni: Yeah, threaded commenting sure helps. It makes it easier for the reader to read, and you as a blogger to reply comments 🙂
As a PR company that has FINALLY started blogging – thanks for some great tips. And after meeting a whole bunch of bloggers at ABBW on Saturday night – overwhelming takeout is – must comment more. On it.
Ian: Ooh thanks for dropping by! You guys are doing a great job on your blog. Ultimately, blogging is a community thing, and it becomes a lot more fun when there’s interaction between you and your readers on the blog and in real life 🙂
PS: Thanks heaps for that really fun gala on ABBW Sat evening 😀
