This is a long-time cult classic product and was incredibly popular back in the day when ladies used to use cold cream to remove the heavy amount of makeup they have on their skin. Apparently Kylie Minogue uses this daily in replacement of Botox to keep her looking so well and youthful. I stumbled upon jars of this at Chemist Warehouse months ago, and since it was only $5 for such a big jar, I thought I’d try it out to see what the fuss was all about.
Description:
Gentle yet effective deep cleansing action removes hidden dirt and make-up, even stubborn waterproof mascara. Its special blend of ingredients softens as it cleanses in one simple step so your skin feels smooth and radiantly clean & never tight or dry.
Here’s how you use it. Simply scoop up a generous amount of the cream and smooth on the skin with your fingertips. Next, gently remove with a tissue, facial cotton or a damp washcloth for deep cleansing. It states that even the most stubborn of makeup would be lifted away while essential oils and emollients replace moisture, leaving your skin soft, smooth and supple.
Well. PHOOEY.
I’m sorry, but I just didn’t like it. In fact, “didn’t like” would be a very gentle term for what I feel about this. It’s gluggy, it’s thick, and it’s horribly greasy when it went on the skin. The oiliness just wouldn’t come off with a regular cleanser, making me cleanse 3-4 times before I could finally get rid of the greasiness. Yes, my foundation and all that came off easily, and so did the rest of my makeup, but it just didn’t feel good using it. I just found it far too rich and heavy for my liking.
So, a cool classic or time to move on? With affordable alternatives in this day and age, I’d say move on. It’s a good thing it wasn’t very expensive to begin with. That’s a fiver I’d never see again.
I’m not sure if other pharmacies still stock the Pond’s Cold Cream, but this is still available at Chemist Warehouse if you’re curious and want to give it a go.
What I like about it: (I’ve never not had anything good to say about a product before) Nothing
What I do not like about it: Very rich, leaves a thick amount of grease on the skin which is difficult to wash off.
yuck! i can imagine the thick gooey and greasy cream gets stuck to the face and you are trying to get rid of it. have never used any cold cream, but thanks for the review, now i know what i shouldn’t buy 😛
Xin: I don’t know if this is available in Malaysia, but I would suggest staying away from it even if it’s cheap 😛
Sounds awful! …..I’m not sure if I would believe anything written in the Telegraph which quoted News of the World….Maybe they made it up as tabloids are known to do…I cannot believe Kylie Minogue would just use that product to help her skin post-Botox. I mean, Gwyneth uses a slew of expensive skincare (with or without injected help – we don’t know) like Skinceuticals etc…
Astrorainfall: It’s not just written in the Telegraph (although I highly agree with you, that and the News of the World? Complete fluff), I’ve read it in legit beauty mags and stuff that she uses this cream. Oh, she claims she didn’t have Botox, but uses this INSTEAD of Botox to keep herself looking young. True or not….*shrug*
Oh I didn’t know that – just followed the link you had in your post. Maybe Kylie has really tough skin and can tolerate Ponds!!!
LOL great review, I love cream cleansers but I can’t imagine wanting to slap this on my face, and my god have you seen Kylie lately, looks like she’s morphing into one of those creepy cat ladies that’s done too much crazy shizz to her face!
Jade: I know, right? I used to think Kylie was prettier than Danni, but I prefer Danni now. At least D is honest about what she does to herself, and she looks pretty damn fine!
People RAVE about this product, but I am somewhat skeptical about it. The heaviness scares my sensitive skin.
Fabuless Beauty: I didn’t think the cream would be so thick. I assumed it to be rich, but moussey. Oh well.
eww, sounds awful! I wouldn’t really wanna put this one my skin if it is so greasy and heavy!
Gio: Oh it is. Years ago, I guess this would work fine, but with so many different types of makeup removers these days, you can surely give this one a pass.
Yeah… something tells me Kylie went back to the Botox.
Dee: My sentiments exactly. Her face looks so … pulled. *shudder*
I think it Ponds might work differently for ang-moh skin in drier climate. It’s probably just nicely moisturizing for them. I read about a girl with French grandmother who slathers Vaseline on her skin! Grandma apparently got no wrinkles! 🙂
If you wanna go old school, do you remember Hazeline snow! 😉
Milktea: OMG I forgot about Hazeline Snow. You are right, it could be that the Ponds’ Cold Cream would work more on Caucasian skin than ours, ‘cos it was obviously doing the crapper on mine. Oh, and Vaseline on skin? Mine would be screaming bloody murder 😛
i use this to remove just my eye makeup and all that stubborn mascara and eyeliner. it works really well. as for the rest of the face, i just use my normal oil-cleanser and there’s no residue or anything left.
I bet instead of using the regular “cool classic,” you should use the CUCUMBER DEEP CLEANSER Pond’s. It is not as thick and creamy, has a great smell, and doesn’t make you feel greasy. Makes your skin beautiful and you will find yourself just smelling the container.
Actually I really love this makeup remover. Except every time I put it on after thrity mins my eyes start to itch and tear up??
Stumbled across this. Just used Pond’s last night as a mask; been using it for years. I agree with the fact that it’s thick and greasy going on, and I also have trouble getting it to wash off. The best way to remove it, and what I’ve found makes my face feel AWESOME, is getting a hot wash cloth, and wiping it all off. If the washcloth gets mucky with the stuff, re-rinse the washcloth with hot water and do over. I’ll usually use a hot washcloth one time after it’s all removed. Have never used soap or moisturizer afterward, and my skin looks great.
The other ways I’ve tried to remove it just don’t make it come off well. Just my two cents.
I’ve used ponds for years, and I’m 33. My skin is never dry or oily. In fact, I hardly ever wear makeup. My mom and my grandmothers used it as well. The thing is, use it for about a week and you’ll notice how your skin doesn’t feel tight after the shower. I always hated that feeling.
I love this product. It’s not greasy at all, but leaves the skin silky smooth. I tried all the best products ranging from $45 to $145 and non can compare to Ponds. I interviewed about 100 women, over the age of 80 with beautiful skin and ask them what they used to have such healthy looking skin. Well, to my surprise, 80% of the women said they used Ponds cold cream. Since then, I’ve been using it for years and my skin looks fabulous. That greasy feeling that some people feel is not grease at all, but a smooth silkiness they’re not use to getting with their traditional cleansers that dry up their skin and cause rashes, breakouts and premature aging.
I love this stuff. Its the ONLY thing that removes stubborn eye makes up without irritating my eyes.
I’ve used this and honestly I’m mixed. I’ve found that if I relax about the feel straight after washing it off with a cloth and warm water then I find that the feeling the next morning is lovely. I don’t have hugely dry skin and don’t even need a separate moisturiser with it. That said I can see why people don’t like the feeling of it. Personally I like the smell and I got used to not feeling “squeaky clean” after but I know from experience that my skin ends up super bad if it’s cleansed too harshly. I like that I can eliminate micellar water/make up remover and moisturiser when I use it. Anything that saves me time is worth it in my book.
I wouldn’t recommend if your skin tends toward the oily though, probably wouldn’t be good for that unless you use old fashioned Witch Hazel afterwards. 🙂
I have used this Ponds the cool classic for eons and it has kept my 91 year old skin supple, I wish I could find more of it as I am on my last jar, anyone know where it can be had?
