For someone with combination skin (normal cheeks and chin, but very, VERY oily T-zone, especially around the nose), it stinks something fierce when I can’t find the right moisturiser or foundation. A few months ago, when I started using Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua foundation, I thought I finally hit the jackpot because it’s incredibly light and holds very well for hours. I was happy and contented for a while there, until I realised that the Vitalumiere Aqua was starting to oxidise on me. It’s not very obvious, but I could tell that my skintone looked ever-so-slightly darker (more yellow) than usual. It’s not a major problem for me; bugger it, I paid $77 for that bottle, I will damn well use it till it’s finished!
Still…
I stumbled upon Bourjois’ Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation when I was doing my weekly patronage to the drugstore Mecca (aka Priceline). Gel foundie, you say? Squeezed some onto the back of my hand (not a good spot to decide on shades, but I just wanted to feel the texture) and it perked my interest. Into the shopping cart it went.
Description:
Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation contains lychee, goji and pomegranate, which work to erase signs of fatigue and achieve a revived and even complexion lasting 16 hours. The gel foundation comes in five different shades designed to blend with all skin tones and conceal blemishes without thick layers or visible lines. The pump action bottle delivers the right measure of foundation each time.
So, what on earth is this gel foundation? First of all, let me clear the air by saying it’s NOT a gel. It’s not the clear, gooey substance you’re used to in shower gels, facial wash gels or gel moisturisers. The foundation doesn’t feel nor look like a gel. I reckon it’s a marketing ploy to attract those with oily/combination skin to buy the product. Which I did.
The foundation pumps out like any other liquid foundation. It’s light and oil-free in texture, and smells amazingly good. There’s a subtle hint of a fruity fragrance in the foundation which I really like. It spreads well on the skin and gives me medium coverage (might be light to some, but it’s good enough for me to even out the skin tone). Whenever I have it on, I don’t feel as though I’m wearing anything on my face.
What I like about the foundation is the staying power. It stayed on my skin for over 8 hours without rubbing off and my T-zone remained oil-free for the first few hours. There wasn’t a hint of oxidation on the skin at all. It’s not very dewy, which can look greasy on oily skin, but just gives that healthy glow. I applied this with my fingers and it was oh-so-smooth.
I’ve had questions from readers on whether this would suit dry skin. To be honest, I’m not sure. Since I don’t have dry skin (trust me, having oily skin is equally, if not more, frustrating), I’m afraid I don’t have an answer for that, except to try it out yourselves. It may not be rich and hydrating enough to some, which is why those with dry skin should perhaps also check out the regular Healthy Mix foundation to compare. I would recommend this to those with normal to combination skin.
What I’m going to say next would be sacrilegious given that I’m a fan of Chanel makeup, but I prefer this to the Vitalumiere Aqua. I just think the Bourjois gel foundation looked better on me than the Chanel.
*hides behind a wall for fear of thrown rotten tomatoes from Chanel fans*
The shade I’m using is #52 in Vanilla.
Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation retails at AU$32 for 30ml and is available at selected Priceline stores, Kmart and Target nationwide.
What I like about it: Long staying power, lightweight, no oxidation, smells lovely
What I do not like about it: Nothing
I have both of these, am yet to try the gel formula but since I have dry skin, I will let you know how it goes for me. The original formula is my fave, let’s see how they stack up!
Btw they are half price at Priceline right now!
Emmabovary: Oooh I know! Too bad I bought mine at full price. Still, I think it’s worth the money 🙂
thanks for the great review! i am always scared to buy foundations since im not sure how they will work on my skin.. coz i have dry cheeks and oily t-zone… but i have read too many good things about this one! i must get myself one to try! 🙂
MEOW: Oh that’s me all right, dry cheeks with an oily T-zone. Annoying as hell 😛
Judging by the look of the photo, it is definitely not GEL formulation! Why on earth would they call it that?
Thanks for the review, I wouldn’t mind this though because I have dry skin! I’ve seen these a lot of times over the internet and nearly bought this via Ebay! Good thing the shade choices stopped me 🙂
Nikki: I think it’s more of a marketing term to attract oily-combo skin than anything. It’s definitely not a gel 🙂
Oh darn! I’m going to hunt this one down! I like the normal Healthy Mix foundation. A lighter texture? Why not? Hand it over please! 😀
Paris B: Can you get Bourjois in Malaysia or Singapore? If not, you want me to get it for you from here? Just say the word 😉
I believe its available in Singapore. Will go look when I’m down 😉
I have the original (and love) though might use it up before buying more foundation (I’m trying to be a good girl ahaha)
Jade: And I applaud you for your perseverance! I should do the same too, but obviously am failing badly 😛
You are of the same shade as me! (hmm, is this colour the same as the other foundation?) I went to Priceline hoping to get the concealer but they are all OOS! The half price promotion caused most of the pretty ones at Prahran Priceline to go off the shelf! I have to go to the city over the weekend to see if I still can get them, else, I’ll just rely on the foundation as a concealer for now..
Eunice: A lot of the good stuff at Priceline Bourke St is gone too. I’m going to see if I can get the concealer when the discount is still on 🙂
dang, I should have picked up a bottle of this while I was there!! :s nevermind, I’ll take this as a sign I need to get my butt back there pronto! :p
Beetrice: Ah ha! There you go! Come back here soon! 😀 😀 If you want one, just let me know. I’ll get it for you.
Thanks for the review. I have both too and they are pretty similar.
Lyn: Thanks for letting us know!
I have shockingly dry skin and this seems to work really well today! First day of using this and I think I was rubbing my face a little as well due to frustration from work, etc but there’s still some left at the end of the day haha! 😀 I used PB’s method of applying the foundation. 3 dots on finger tips and apply. 🙂
LeGeeque: Awesome! Very glad to know it works for you. What’s the 3-dot-finger-application? I will have to scour PB’s blog to find out! 😛
Wow I was just eyeing this product today and wondering if it would be suitable for my skin type and then your review pops up! I ended up just getting the normal Healthy Mix which I am currently using and love!
Megan: Good to know, Megan. As long as the regular one works for you, you can save money and not get the gel one 🙂
I have this stupid oily skin and most of the time I don’t find my foundation doing any its job on me! This seems promising, but can I find this in China? 🙁
Maddy K: Oh dear, I’m afraid I don’t know if this is available in China 🙁 You could perhaps try searching for it online?
More updates: I think I might pass on the Giorgio armani Luminous Silk. It’s not quite a dupe but at 1/6th of a price thanks to Priceline’s 50% off on Bourjois, I can’t bring myself to switch. 😛
LeGeeque: Hot dang, you’re giving up Giorgio Armani’s foundation for this? Well, that’s saying something about the Bourjois foundie, isn’t it? 😛
Thanks for the review, if it is any consolation for giving up your Vitalumiere did you know Chanel owns Bourjois?
I’m a combo skin type also and currently use the Bourjois 10hr sleep Affect foundation as it is good for winter but I will look into getting this foundation for summer as I am quite oily.
Sara: Haha I know. Don’t you just LOVE the price difference though? 😛
Hi I have sensitive & combination skin. wonder if this gel foundation would be too harsh for me?
THL: I too have combination skin with sensitive cheeks. I’ve had no problems with it. But if you do have highly-sensitized skin, and am still not 100% sure if you should give it a go or not, I’d say, give it a miss. Err on the side of caution 🙂
Don’t feel bad! Bourjois is Chanel anyway so you’re still loyal technically 😉
Hahaha true true 😀
